2. POSITION SUMMARY

Responsibilities include preparation of solutions, maintaining inventory of reagents and experimental animals, performing experiments based on established protocols, troubleshooting/optimizing protocols in consultation with colleagues and PI, and ordering/maintaining equipment. Duties will be completed within the research laboratories in the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES: Group activities into categories and list in point form each duty performed until the major elements of the position are represented. Review each statement to ensure that it accurately describes what is done and briefly, how it is done.

Please indicate the percentage of time spent on each of the major activities listed

Performs laboratory protocols and techniques and modifies them if necessary, in consultation with PI, colleagues and the scientific literature to achieve optimum results

Prepares and monitors medias, reagents and solutions for group members

Tissue dissection and preparation of tissues for microscopy

Analysis of histological sections

Assists with maintenance of transgenic mouse colony

Performs experiments to identify the fate of cells during a prion infection

Maintains and orders lab equipment and supplies

Assists with collection and maintenance of data, initiates analysis in consultation with PI

Prepares figures for publications

4. KNOWLEDGE: Identify the minimum formalized training/education and/or qualifications required to prepare an individual to be functional in the position.

Post-secondary education of a Bachelor’s or less with up to 18 months to become functional in the role.

Major changes to agreed upon protocols or the prioritization of tasks are to be discussed verbally with PI

Changes to animal care or biosafety protocols should be obtained in writing from the PI

6. CONSEQUENCE OF ERRORS: Identify the extent of losses which result from mistakes in judgment or poor decisions (typical instances, not rare or extreme ones), and the responsibility for safety of others.

Mistakes making solutions or measuring amount of solutions in protocols could cost several hours of work thus delaying results. Such mistakes can cost 100's to 1000's of dollars.
