Task Description

Part 1
1. Either individually or in groups of 2-3, you will complete an original composition in a style of your
choosing. You will be assessed on your understanding and use of the concepts of music (Duration,
Pitch, Structure, Texture, Tone Colour, Dynamics and Expressive Techniques).
http://youtu.be/azK7tOWJRDE
2. You may choose any musical structure in which to create your composition. Here are two
suggestions:
Song Form
Compose a 2-3 minute song. You will use verse/chorus structure e.g. Introduction, Verse, Chorus, Verse,
Bridge, Chorus or a variation on this structure. You will compose lyrics as well as a melody. You do not need
to submit a score.
Theme and Variation
You will compose an 8-16 bar theme or motif. You will create a chord progression to base your composition on
and will compose 2-3 variations on your original theme. You must submit a score as part of this option.

3. You will present your work to the class (either performance or recording) on the due date
Part 2
1. You will document your composition
http://youtu.be/7XZgrSUy0lc
As part of your composition, you will document the creation of your composition via any method you choose.
This will be a way to discuss and record ideas, decisions, inspiration and challenges you encountered in the
completion of your composition. It will also be a way for your group to communicate clearly and demonstrate
this communication as well as a way for your teacher to give you feedback relating to your composition
process.
You may choose to use a variety of media to show your work – website links to inspiration, musical scores and
excerpts, songs that you like and that you may have ‘borrowed’ riffs, melodies, chord progressions from.
Here are some suggestions for HOW TO DO THIS…
- Weekly video diary entries – your group discusses what you achieved that week and what do for the
future
- Weekly written diary entries – blog entires on edmodo small group (teacher to set up), an actual blog
(Tumblr, Edublogs and the like), typed/handwritten diary entries
2. You will reflect on and assess your own and another groups composition
In week 8, you will complete an analysis of another group’s composition and give them feedback in order to
allow them to improve. Use the marking criteria and scaffold provided (either in OneNote or Word). You will
analyse how the group has used the concepts of music – Duration, Pitch, Structure, Texture, Tone Colour,
Dynamics and Expressive Techniques.
Both of these activities will help you to reflect on and assess your own composition. In week 4, you are
expected to have a meeting with your teacher to discuss your documentation so far and the peer feedback you
have been given.
Failure to complete this task by the due date will result in you receiving an N Award warning letter which
clearly indicates you are at risk of attaining your Preliminary School Certifica
