CATTLEMAN’S FIELD DAY AT OLD HOMESTEAD FARM A great crowd of Cattle producers from Henry, Shelby, Oldham, and Trimble Counties attended the Annual Regional Cattleman’s Field Day, Wednesday, October 1, at Old Homestead Farm in Henry County. The land was awarded to Peter Foree for his services in the Revolutionary War, with Bobby and Jean Kay now representing the 7th generation, and Roby and Ashley representing the 8th generation to farm this land. Perfect weather greeted the nearly 250 in attendance, who were able to take wagon tours around the farm to see the many forage/livestock farming practices utilized in the large cattle operation, which includes both purebred and commercial cow-calf herds, as well as backgrounding and purebred animal finishing. UK Forage and Beef Specialists made presentations as various tour stops on the farm, as did Dr. Muncey Pryor and UK Veterinarian Dr. Michelle Arnold. Upon arrival back at the farmyard, participants were treated to a real nice ‘trade show’. A sponsored beef meal was prepared by the Cattleman’s Associations of Henry, Shelby, Oldham, and Trimble Counties. Sponsors included: PBI Bank, United Citizens Bank, Citizens Deposit Bank, Farm Credit Services, Henry County Farm Bureau Federation, Bluegrass Livestock Marketing Group, and Kentucky 811, as well as the Extension Services from the 4 counties. After supper, the group heard discussions from Roby and Bobby Foree, who explained the farm size, scope, and enterprizes. The entire Foree Family was on hand to meet and greet their many guests. Dr. Jimmy Henning, UK Cooperative Extension Service Director, Drew Graham, Assistant to the Dean, and Dr. Nancy Cox, Dean of the College of Agriculture spoke about the long standing partnership of local farms and farm leaders with programs of the UK College of Agriculture. While the Foree family had dealings with Cooperative Extension even before, in 1939 Bina Baird Foree became Henry County’s first Home Demonstration Agent. David Maples, Executive Director of the Kentucky Cattleman’s Association, was also on hand to make a presentation. So many people, most of all the Foree Family, pitched in to make this Cattleman’s Field Day a memorable one. This County Agent tips his hat to each of the volunteers and sponsors for their efforts in producing a great social, networking, and educational event at Old Homestead Farm. OCTOBER THIRD THURSDAY The October Third Thursday event, October 16, will feature Holistic Grazing.
