B- Have the ability to solve surgical problems and perform specific tasks needed from a primary health care physician. 2- Intended Learning Outcomes of Course (ILOs): A. Knowledge and Understanding: By the end of the course, students will be able to: . Explain the physiological and pathological processes related to surgical problems. . Describe the pathogenesis, anatomical basis of surgical problems and the anatomical basis of operative management. .Describe the clinical manifestations of common surgical conditions and their complications. . Describe emergency surgical conditions. . List different modalities of investigations used for diagnosis of diseases (laboratory, radiology, histopathology, endoscopy.). . Explain principles of disease screening and prevention. . Outline the management of surgical emergencies. .Outline the operative and non-operative modalities in the management of common surgical conditions, (indications and contraindications). .Explain basic principles of operative surgery like types of incisions, wound closure, methods of haemostasis, etc. 2 .Describe techniques of specified minor surgical procedures that he/she may perform during the postgraduate training year. .Outline principles of the common surgical procedures including developing techniques, like minimally invasive, bariatric, transplantation procedures, etc. .Explain preoperative preparation and postoperative care of common surgical procedures. .Recognize different iatrogenic lesions caused during common surgical practice. . Demonstrate knowledge of ethical issues commonly encountered during surgical practice. B. Intellectual Skills By the end of the course, students will be able to: -Integrate basic and clinical data to reach a diagnosis. -Select and prioritize appropriate investigations for a defined clinical situation and interpret the results. -Correlate clinical data and results of investigations to reach a diagnosis. - Generate a differential diagnosis for a clinical finding or set of findings. -Diagnose iatrogenic, interventional and peri-operative complications from given relevant data. -Identify the surgical conditions of public health and decide when to report and refer to higher health authority - Use evidence based medicine in solving clinical problems. -Formulate appropriate management plan for individual patients presenting with common surgical diseases. 3 - Formulate initial line of treatment in surgical emergencies. C. Professional Skills By the end of the course, students will be able to: Obtain and record relevant medical history from the patient or a relative. Perform general physical examination of patients with common surgical problems including: i. Proper Abdominal Examination ii. Examination of Breast. iii. Examination of Inguinoscrotal swellings. iv. Urologic examination (abd, pelvis, prostate and genitalia) v. Examination of swellings. vi. Examination of ulcers. vii. Examination of Lower Limb. viii. Examination of limbs to detect fractures, infections, swellings, skeletal deformities and length discrepancy. ix. Examination of joints properly to identify infection, deformity, ligament injury, effusion and dislocations. x. Proper Head and Neck Examination xi. Examination of local defects in cleft lip and palate patient. xii. Neurological examination of patients to detect common neurosurgical problems. xiii. Examination of the spine (vertebrae of neck and trunk). 4 xiv. Examination of a convalescent patient after cardiothoracic surgery to Identify and diagnose the abnormal findings to refer to specialized center. xv. Calculation of surface area and depth of simulated burn patient. Identify pathologic findings in different modalities of imaging. Write safe prescriptions of different types of drugs based on patient's weight, age and health conditions to manage common and life threatening conditions. Practice basic principles of self and patient safety while dealing with surgical patients. Perform bladder catheterization in male manikin. (preceded by video demonstration) Simulate first aid measures for injured and critically ill patient: i. Simulate first aid measures in Shock and Bleeding (internal and external) ii. Perform Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. iii. Perform emergency tapping of tension pneumothorax or massive pleural effusion. iv. Simulate first aid measures in burn patient v. Suture superficial wound. vi. Perform wound dressing and bandage. vii. Simulate first aid measure in patient with amputated limb. viii. viii Simulate first aid measures in life threatening maxillofacial trauma. Identify and explain the use of equipment, disposables and instruments commonly used in surgery. 5 Communicate clearly, sensitively and effectively with patients and their care givers, regardless of their social, cultural or ethnic background. D. General Skills: By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Respect the interests and dignity of patients and families. 2.
