Look Around--Matter is everywhere & it’s always changing! Applying Chemistry Summative Project Your task is to apply your chemistry understandings to the world outside of the classroom--beyond what we have already done! Make sure to explain the physical & chemical changes and properties along with the Particle Theory of Matter to whatever situation you choose from the list below. Criteria: your Project must include... Great Understanding of Chemistry Content Proper scientific vocabulary Describe & explain particle arrangement & movement of at least 3 phases: Describe & give specific information about how at least 3 phase change processes occur during each change in state: melting, freezing, condensation, evaporation, sublimation, ionization Describe & explain 1 physical & 1 chemical property of matter you encounter Describe & explain 1 physical & 1 chemical change of matter that occurs Well-Organized Ideas a visual way of showing your well-organized product Google Slideshow, Written Story (on Google Docs), brochure or other ideas welcome (check with your teacher first though!!— The focus is on the content, not the technology!) Solid, Liquid, Gas, and/or Plasma If your project is digital, it will be submitted digitally (through Google Drive) The finished product for this project is due at the end of class on Wed, 11/25 **Chose ONE (& only ONE) of the situations below to share your understanding of Chemistry: Situation 1 2 Role Audience Format Topic Water drop going through the water cycle “new” water droplet hires New employee handbook or training manual Explain what a new water droplet should do to move through the states and phase changes (evaporation, melting, etc.) of the water cycle. --Be sure to include some of the physical and chemical properties and changes they will experience in their job. A scientific chef making a meal A New Show: Food Network meets Bill Nye Magazine article, recipe, cooking “show” (slideshow ok) The physical and chemical properties and changes of the food as you make it. Food is matter that follows the particle theory of matter. (yes! Even in real-life!) Particle of Matter Matter that has never experienced a change in state A postcard, brochure, slideshow about your travels to other states...of matter. Discuss your travels through the 4 states of matter. Include how particles move, behave, & change through the states (evaporation, melting, etc.). Also be sure to describe some physical and chemical properties and physical/chemical changes of some matter that you see during your travels. Meteorologist Viewers Weather Report Give a weather report for an area or a country that has all 3 forms (S,L,G) of matter & all of the phase changes (evaporation, melting, etc.) 3 4 Describe some of the physical and chemical properties & changes of a selected piece of matter that relates to the report. 5 Minecraft (creative or survival mode) OR Hayday Game gamers worldwide Player guide, instructional manual, or overview of new additions to the platform Discuss how the 4 states of matter would be experienced or navigated in either game. Include how particles would move, behave, & change through the states (evaporation, melting, etc.) and how that connects to the game itself. Also be sure to describe some physical and chemical properties and any changes of some matter that you see in the game. Matter Superhero 6 The World of Matter Superhero Bio (all about you) page OR Comic Strip Write from the perspective of one state of matter that will save the world from certain doom. Be sure to describe how you (as 1 type of matter) move, behave, and change in comparison to other states of matter. Weave into your story how phase changes affect you (or the world) & some observations of the physical and chemical properties & changes of the World of Matter around you. Applying Chemistry Rubric: _____/40 **This project will go in as a Test/Enduring Understanding grade. You are encouraged to use all of your materials in your science notebook & on the teacher page to make this an amazing representation of your understanding! **This is a “half-naked” rubric...I’ve shown you what a 1 & 3 look like. If you want to earn a 4, your product needs to be better than “3” level understanding & quality! :) Criteria 4 3 2 1 Have 3 phases/states explained. Very Phases of Particle arr & movement described. Eloquent Matter (3 states x 4 pt scale =12 pts total ____/12 Less than 3 phases Less than 3 phases explained. Particle arr & movement is missing Have 3 phase change processes Very Phase described. Explain changes in particle Eloquent Changes arrangement & changes in motion. ___/12 Less than 3 changes Less than 3 processes explained. Change in particle arr & movement is missing Have one physical & one chemical Phys/ & Chem Very Eloquent property explained clearly. Properties ___/4 Missing a prop Missing a property & have incorrect info. You explained at least one physical Very Physical & Eloquent and one chemical change & describe Chemical how you know. Changes ___/4 Missing a change Missing a change or have incorrect info. (3 processes x 4 pt scale =12 pts total Organization Nicely done Your ideas are organized pretty well. The “science” connects with your topic. Hard to follow No connectivity. Have a lot of “science” w/o connections or a lot of “story” w/o “science”. Lots of pics and text Whatever way you picked to present your understanding is a great fit--you matched your strengths with your topic/format! *Way to be creative! Just text Needs more time spent on it to clearly communicate your ideas. ___/4 Creative Visuals ___/4 Total your points out of 40
