The S 415 LE business is ready for boarding. This new member of the Setra
MultiClass is an efficient low-entry rural regular-service bus that combines
economy and functionality in a new dimension. The economical two-axle vehicle
offers the ideal combination of barrier-free access at the front with a
low-maintenance raised-floor area in the rear.
Take a seat in the ergonomically designed cockpit to learn more about the
advantages of this future-oriented vehicle concept.
The S 415 LE business fully meets the constantly growing requirements with
regard to new equipment lines, especially for passengers with impaired mobility.
The efficient low-entry bus also satisfies all relevant criteria for contract tenders
across the whole of Europe.
New length for even more space
At 3350 mm, the Setra S 415 LE business test vehicle has the same body height
as the Setra S 415 UL business, which was launched a year ago. Yet, at
12,330 mm, it is 130 mm longer due to its optimised seating space. The wheelbase is 6330 mm. The developers have provided the S 415 LE business with
room for two stowage compartments, each with a capacity of 250 litres, which
are available to the driver on the left and right in front of the drive axle.
High convenience thanks to low entry
Especially elderly passengers and people with impaired mobility will benefit
from the low entrance height, which, on the test vehicle with 295/80 R 22.5 tyres,
is 345 mm at the front entrance. This figure drops to 305 mm if the optional
275/70 R 22.5 tyres are chosen.
The boarding height at entrance II is 385 mm with 295 tyres and 340 mm with
275 tyres. The electronic level control on the S 415 LE business allows further
lowering by up to 70 mm using the kneeling function.

Flexible door widths for entrance II
Page 3
In the standard version, the front door on the S 415 LE business is single-wing
with a width of 1150 mm. Entrance II comes as standard with a pneumatically
operated single-wing outward-swinging door. The 1150 mm door width is suitable for wheelchair users and satisfies the requirements in terms of disability
equipment. The installation of a manually operated folding ramp with a loadcarrying capacity of up to 350 kilograms is also possible in this area. Entrance II
is optionally available with a 1380-mm-wide double-wing door.
Cockpit with multifunction display
The S 415 LE business is equipped as standard with the ergonomically designed
cockpit from the Setra MultiClass modular system. This provides extensive
adjustment possibilities as well as the integration of a multifunction display in the
instrument panel. The steering column is adjustable in height and inclination.
Setra optionally provides such extras as lockable stowage compartments, additional stowage space in front of entrance I and installation of a payment system,
payment tray and ticket printer. A driver's door is optionally available and provides additional stowage space.
Efficient and rugged interior
The interior of the S 415 LE business is efficient and rugged - with easy-to-clean
ceiling and side trim panels. In the front half of the bus, the seats are mounted on
190-mm-high bases. 2620 mm of headroom is available in the low-floor front
section. Ahead of the rear axle, two steps each of 220 mm afford access to the
rear section. If the LE business is to be registered as an urban regular-service bus
(class I), the rear section is modified for access via three 152-mm steps.
Depending on the equipment line, the area opposite entrance II can be flexibly
equipped with one or two pram/wheelchair spaces. A low shoulder line at a
height of 650 mm ensures that seated passengers also enjoy good outward
Seats for up to 49 passengers
In the maximum seating configuration, the S 415 LE business comes as standard
with 49 seats for passengers (without wheelchair space). The Setra Transit seats
are fitted with 2-point lap belts. The equally highly robust Setra Route seat with

can choose from a wide range of Setra fabric designs and materials as well as
grab rails in various colours. Full-length luggage shelves with mesh bottoms
provide passengers with generous stowage space.
Simply compact - the Euro VI engine OM 936
The S 415 LE business for the press trial drive is powered by a 260 kW (354 hp)
variant of the Mercedes-Benz OM 936 six-cylinder in-line engine with two-stage
turbocharger. This compact and lightweight 7.7-litre powerplant, which has
already proved its worth in MultiClass raised-floor buses, is also available from
Setra in a 220 kW (299 hp) variant. The maximum torque is 1400 Nm and
1200 Nm, respectively. The engine features common rail direct injection with a
high-pressure pump. Fuel economy is up to five percent higher in comparison
with the Euro V engines in the previous models.
The vertically mounted BlueEfficiency Power generation engine impresses with
long service intervals of up to 90,000 kilometres.
There is an unusually wide choice of transmission variants. Customers can
choose between a GO 190 six-speed manual transmission, the fully automated
GO 250-8 PowerShift manual transmission, and ZF EcoLife and Voith DIWA.6
automatic torque converter transmissions.
More safety thanks to an optimised frame structure
The S 415 LE business comes with state-of-the-art safety systems, such as the anti-lock braking system (ABS), acceleration skid control (ASR), Brake Assist
(BAS) and electronic braking system (EBS). The frame structure of the vehicle
has been revised with the use of additional stiffening elements and higherstrength steels.
The bus provides rollover resistance according to the ECE-R 66/02 regulation.
The electronic stability program (ESP) and the tyre pressure monitoring system
(TPMS) are optionally available.

MultiClass 400 vehicles feature optimum levels of flexibility and economy. Bus
operators can choose from a total of 12 models in this Setra product segment.
With a length of 10.81 metres, the S 412 UL is the most manoeuvrable model. Its
compact length makes it ideal for cost-effective regular-service routes in topographically challenging regions with narrow and steep passes. The other vehicles
of the MultiClass 400 series are the 12.20-metre-long S 415 UL, the
14.05-metre-long S 417 UL and the 14.98-metre-long S 419 UL. Plenty of
luggage capacity, comfortable seats and a versatile range of appointments, such
as a galley, toilet and air conditioning system, mean that these vehicles offer the
ideal combination of attributes for regular-service and touring operations.
In 2007, Setra launched the S 416 UL, which expanded the product range of the
MultiClass 400 with a new vehicle length. Compared with the S 415 UL, the
wheelbase of the 13.04-metre-long S 416 UL has been extended from 6080 mm
to 6920 mm. This provides space for an even larger luggage compartment
capacity, which now totals 5.8 cubic metres.
With the world premiere of the S 415 H and S 416 H, in 2009 Setra launched a
new raised-floor bus as a classic double-earner. It is available in 12.20 and 13.04
metre variants with two axles. These new rural-service buses have a major
advantage: with the aisle at about 1040 mm above the road, it has been possible
to design the vehicle with an attractive luggage capacity of up to 7.9 cubic
Setra adds five "business" variants to its product range
All vehicles in the MultiClass 400 range were converted to Euro VI engines in
2013. In autumn 2013, Setra extended its product range. With the
12.20-metre-long S 415 UL business, the 12.70-metre-long S 416 UL business
and the 13.38-metre-long S 417 UL business, the company unveiled three UL
variants in efficient and economical equipment lines that guarantee maximum
economy of operation on long-distance routes as well as in school transport
The Setra UL business is perfectly suited to tenders for contracts – economical in
its acquisition and maintenance, functional in its specification.

Decisive step 20 years ago:
Setra MultiClass buses as foundation pillar of EvoBus
Page 14
Launch of new MultiClass buses at the 55th German International
Motor Show (IAA) in Hanover in1994
New bus assembly plant in Neu-Ulm, Setra MultiClass buses and
state-of-the-art plant in Ligny-en-Barrois (Lorraine, France) as
excellent basis for the pending merger between Mercedes-Benz Buses
and Setra
Stuttgart/Neu-Ulm – 1994 was a year of destiny for the then 101-year-old firm
known as Kässbohrer Fahrzeugwerke GmbH. The long-established company
from Ulm was in search of a promising way in which to secure its future. Despite
all the firm's business- and market-related difficulties, however, the designers at
Setra were working on a new generation of rural regular-service buses in an
effort to secure the company's long-established market leadership in this
segment. Yet what the engineers did not know and could not have anticipated
was that, alongside the Series 300 touring coaches, which had already been
successfully launched in 1991, this new line of vehicles was destined to play a
key role in the survival of the tradition of bus construction in Ulm. In a development time of just 12 months, they realised the platform for the new MultiClass
buses, which, in the form of UL = rural service, H = raised floor and GT = Grand
Tourismo, provided bus operators with vehicles that were to find application as
genuine "double earners" in mixed service (regular and occasional service).
17 years on, the new S 315 UL, S 315 H and S 315 GT took over from the
regular-service buses of the old 200 Series, which had been launched in 1977.
These former Kässbohrer/Setra MultiClass buses of the 300 Series were to
become the basis for EvoBus's successful Setra MultiClass 400 of today. The
brand attributes of those days still hold true for today's MultiClass buses. Also at
that time, one basic platform gave rise, thanks to a modular construction principle, to three different models. The familiar "Setra face", distinctive exterior
mirrors, bright interior, ergonomic cockpit area and powerful line-up of engines –
these are all features that still apply today to the new MultiClass with its now
12 model series.
Opened on 5 October 1992 after a two-year construction period, the bus assembly plant in Neu-Ulm must also be viewed as a key asset on the balance sheet of
the former Karl Kässbohrer Fahrzeugwerke GmbH in light of the due diligence
checks that were being carried out with a view to a possible takeover of
Kässbohrer's bus division by what was then Mercedes-Benz AG.
Daimler Communications, 70546 Stuttgart, Germany

Capital expenditure on this plant, which at that time had an area of 306,000 m2,
Page 15
amounted to 170 million marks. Twenty years ago, the facility had a workforce
of 2000 employees, who produced around 2200 complete buses every year for
rural service and touring. Today, some 3500 workers in Neu-Ulm are engaged in
the painting and assembly of urban, rural service and touring buses of the two
EvoBus brands. Since EvoBus was founded in February 1995, Daimler AG has
additionally invested around 190 million euros in a customer centre, administration building and state-of-the-art paint-spraying facilities in Neu-Ulm.
The still existing production facility in Ligny-en-Barrois, approximately halfway
between Strasbourg and Paris, was another asset that played a key role in
Mercedes-Benz's thinking at the time of the merger: built by Kässbohrer, the
state-of-the-art bus plant opened in 1981 with the series production of Setra buses, mainly for the French market, but it also served Setra customers in the rest of
western Europe. Today, Ligny is an important pillar for supplying the French
market. It has a workforce of around 400 employees, who produce on average
each year some 800 Mercedes-Benz Citaro urban regular-service and school buses for customers in France. The tremendous growth enjoyed by Ligny and its
products is evident from the doubling of annual unit sales, because, even in a
very good year, Kässbohrer previously used to sell no more than
300 to 400 Setra buses per year in France.
The more than 100 years of tradition in bus construction at Mercedes-Benz in
Mannheim and Kässbohrer/Setra in Ulm/Neu-Ulm have spawned visible success
in the guise of EvoBus. Innovative developments coordinated with the diverse
possibilities available from the world's automotive technology leader, as well as
an integral bus production network made up of five plants in Germany, France,
Czech Republic and Turkey today form the basis for unique efficiency and product quality across national borders. The guiding principle behind EvoBus has at
all times been clearly defined: while adopting a two-brand strategy, to harness all
the synergies available from within the Daimler Group to use state-of-the-art
drive and safety systems that meet the specific mobility requirements of both today and tomorrow.
