2010 Genealogy 101: Beginner’s Packet Staff Instructions Prerequisite Assessment: Filling out the Genealogy Surname Index demonstrates the learner's ability to print neatly, understand basic organization skills and identify if they know information pertaining to the first (themselves) generation and possibly second generation. Staff Instructions: When the learner arrives inform them that the Genealogy Department maintains a small Genealogy Surname Index Card Catalog. The Card Catalog is used by other patrons searching for family members with the same surnames. While voluntary for most patrons, those taking the non-instructor lead program are required to complete the index cards. Learners are to remain in the department. 1. Give learner the 3 x 5 Genealogy Surname Index card 2. Ask learner to neatly print in ink information onto the Genealogy Surname Index Card 3. Request learner to stay in the Genealogy Department 3. Inform learner that when completed bring back to the Genealogy Reference Desk for cataloging. 4. Give index card to instructor for evaluation. Genealogy Index Card Review: Upon completion of all work, send a copy of the Genealogy Surname Index Card and scoring sheet to Training Services. If the learner scores 3-4 points the index card will be placed in the Genealogy Surname Index File. If the learner scores 2 or below they will be asked to fill out a new index card paying close attention to the legibility of their handwriting. Tell the learner to bring the worksheets back to the desk when completed. Inform learners that they are to remain in the department.
