Brooklands School Information about transition to Secondary School We understand that the move from Brooklands to secondary school is one of the most important transitions in your child’s education and as such we are providing some information to support your understanding of the process of identifying and allocating a secondary placement. At the Year 4 Annual Review it is important that an initial discussion takes place about secondary school. Even though transition is over two years away it is vitally important that you begin to consider which secondary provision would be most appropriate for your child. The member of staff chairing the meeting will offer some information about possible secondary schools within the local authority which you might want to consider visiting. We strongly recommend that you make arrangements to visit local special schools in year 4 and begin to form an opinion about which secondary school would be best for your child. The Year 5 Annual Review is the ‘transition’ review and as such is extremely important in determining the secondary placement for your child. At the meeting substantial time will be given over to discussions about possible secondary schools. Ideally you should come to the meeting with a clear idea about the secondary school that you would like your child to attend after they leave Brooklands. The school will also record its recommendations for secondary placement. An Educational Psychologist (EP) will attend the review on behalf of the Local Authority (LA) and put forward their professional opinion about the most appropriate secondary placement to meet your child’s specific needs. The EP will have met the class teacher and observed your child in class before the annual review. The views of those attending the transition review will be recorded in the annual review paperwork (the AR011) which the school submit to the South-East SEN Management Team. After the Year 5 review your child’s case officer will read the AR011 making a note of your preferred secondary placement. The report will be passed on to the EP who attended the transition review. They will make a comment about which admission forum your child should go forward to. Admission forums are multi-professional meetings held in November each year at which year 6 pupils are allocated their secondary school place. Soon after your child starts Year 6 you will receive a letter (code 920) informing you that your child will be put forward at the appropriate admissions forum. There are admission forums for pupils with SLD, ASD and LD. Your child will be allocated a secondary school placement at one of the forums. The LA will inform you of the decision about where your child will be placed for their secondary education by December 3rd. So by that date you will know where your child is going to go for their secondary education. Hopefully it is your preferred choice. If it is not your preferred choice then you will have the right of appeal. Information about how you can pursue the right of appeal will be provided in the 920 letter. Your child’s Statement of SEN must be updated by February 15th. A statement writer will complete this using the AR011 and reports submitted as part of the annual review meetings in Year 5 (and Year 6, if available). The new Education, Health and Care Plans which are being phased in to replace statements over the next four years will also need to be updated by this date.
