Main Purpose:
To act as custodian of the Bletchley Park site and buildings and ensure the site is in a
clean, safe and presentable standard at all times.
To be responsible for the care and upkeep of the Bletchley Park site and buildings,
including keeping the buildings secure, maintaining the cleanliness of the site and
buildings, assisting with health and safety checks and assessments and undertaking
minor repairs of buildings and equipment as required.

11. Physically fit, able to lift/carry and work at heights (using ladders)
12. A knowledge of and interest in the Bletchley Park story and a willingness to
promote the Trust’s mission
The following skills are desirable, but not essential as full training will be given:
1. Previous experience or caretaking and/or portering, ideally with handyperson
knowledge
2. First Aid at Work qualification
This role is public facing and as such a dress code is in place
This role will also be required to be available for out-of-hours call-out, on a rota basis.
This role will be manned by 2 persons who must work together to ensure leave
entitlements are covered by the team as far as reasonable. Additional hours worked as
cover will be reimbursed at time.
Key Responsibilities:
Site cleaning
a. Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the site at all times, to specifically
include:
●
Regularly collecting rubbish from public bins around the Park,
replacing bin bags as necessary (but ensuring bin bags usage is
kept to a minimum, reusing bags as much as possible)
●
Regularly emptying ashtrays from around the Park
●
disposing of rubbish collected within designated bins (skips), and
move these bins to and from the designated collection points as
required, using the electric vehicle as appropriate
●
daily check of all signs, memorials and lecterns, cleaning as
appropriate, followed by bi-weekly thorough cleaning of same
●
leaf clearance as necessary
●
snow clearance as necessary
●
regularly check pathways and other pedestrian areas to ensure
clean and safe and sweep as necessary
●
visually inspect the play area at the start of the day and
periodically during the day to identify and address any safety
concerns
●
litter picking, from key areas as soon as identified, and from more
discrete areas on a regular basis (particularly first thing in the
morning), to include car parks and other areas outside of the
payzone
●
six monthly pressure wash of mansion patio area
●
monthly pressure wash of site rubbish carts and clean of internal
bins
●
to respond promptly to requests from the Duty Manager to clean
specific incidences as required
Toilet cleaning
b. To ensure all toilets on site remain clean, tidied and stocked with
provisions, to include:
●
regular checks (as rota’d) of all public toilets to ensure they
remain clean and tidy
●
general tidy, sweep and clean of all public toilets at least twice
daily
●
empty bins and restock paper towels, soap and toilet rolls at least
twice daily
●
placing of ‘wet floor’ signs as required (and subsequent removal)
●
unblocking toilets or sinks as necessary and within capabilities
●
to respond promptly to requests from the Duty Manager to clean
specific areas or replenish specific toilet areas as required
Building cleaning
c. To ensure visitor buildings remain clean and tidy, to include:
●
twice daily checks of all visitor huts and blocks to ensure entrance
and exit areas are welcoming and tidy
●
sweeping and cleaning these areas as necessary following
checks
●
bi-annual clearing of gutters
Locking and unlocking
d. To lock and unlock buildings as per rota
e. To activate and deactivate alarms as per rota
‘Back office’ cleaning
f. To ensure office, staff, education and other non-public areas remain
clean, undertaking tasks outside of the cleaners responsibilities, to
include:
●
Daily collecting rubbish from bins in staff and back-office areas,
replacing bin bags as necessary (but ensuring bin bags usage is
kept to a minimum, reusing bags as much as possible)
●
Emptying/collecting shredded waste and recyclable waste as
necessary
●
Monthly cleaning of all refrigerators with soapy water, checking
fridge temperatures and recording
●
Cleaning carpets, using carpet cleaner, as requested
●
Buffering of floors in chosen areas in the Mansion
●
High level cleaning of the Mansion Billiard and Ballroom twice a
year
Health and safety checks
g. To wear Personal Protective Equipment (clothing) as appropriate and to
follow Health and Safety procedures at all times.
h. To assist the Estates Planner/Co-ordinator in monitoring health and safety,
to include:
●
scheduled fire alarm tests
●
weekly checking of all fire protection equipment
●
light bulb check and replacement
●
fuse replacement as necessary
●
responding to alarm call-outs during working hours
Estates van duties
●
to collect and deliver articles in the site van as requested
●
to refill the site van with diesel as necessary, obtaining the
necessary petty cash from Finance and returning change and
receipt immediately afterwards
●
to wash the exterior and clean the interior of the site van as
requested
Site repairs and breakdowns
●
To undertake minor repairs to buildings or equipment as
requested, within capabilities
●
To investigate drainage issues and recommend appropriate
actions
●
To meet, direct and supervise contractors onsite as requested
Out-of-hours
●
To be available for out-of-hours call-out, dependent on rota
Other
●
To provide break cover for Porters Lodge Officers as required
●
To assist with furniture and equipment set-up, shifting and takedown for events, office relocations and exhibitions as requested
●
To undertake any other duties as reasonably requested.
Conditions:
Monday to Thursday, 7.30am to 6.30 pm with ½ hour lunch break.
Occasional Friday to Sunday hours as cover for other caretaker.
Company Pension scheme after 3 months. 6 month probationary
period. No health cover offered. Holiday 25 days pa including
statutory holidays (based on FTE of 31 days pa). Based at
Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes. 1 months’ notice either way
General:
