ALABAMA GREECE INITIATIVE2nd Research Collaboration Initiative PROPOSAL SUMMARIES – University of Alabama and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Collaborators Delegation visit to ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI, May 3 – 8, 2015 Headed by Assoc. Prof. Tatiana Tsakiropoulou – Summers, Department of Modern Languages and Classics. NAME DEPARTMENT PROJECT DESCRIPTION Ian Brown ibrown@ua. edu Anthropology Museums in Common Explore ways in which faculty, students, and the resources of the UA and AUTh can be shared to examine the meaning and value of museums in the 21st century and possibly create a shared Museum Studies program with Aristotle University. James (Andy) Crank jacrank@ua. English The South’s Greek Accent: Southern Culture’s Greek Perspective Examine the transnational cultural exchanges between the American South and Greece, especially in terms of AUTh CONTACTS EMAIL Prof. Konstantinos Kotsakis, Chair of the School of History and Archaeology. Prof. Spyridon Pavlides, School of Geology. kotsakis@hist.auth.gr Prof. Matoula Skaltsa, School of Architecture, D Section Department of History of Architecture, Art History, Architectural Morphology and Restoration, Director of the Interuniversity Graduate Program “Museology” of AUTh and the University of Western Macedonia. scaltsa@arch.auth.gr Assoc. Expertise:A scholar with similar interest in the humanities, esp. literature, history, film, American studies, and/or social sciences. Attainment of Oral Feeding Skills in Preterm Infants: Influence of Neonatal Co-morbidities Across Medical Communities Compare strategies employed at the UA and AUTh, aiming at improving the time preterm infants need to reach full oral feeding ability. Adaptively Parameterized Tomography of the Western Hellenic Subduction Zone Use of adaptively parameterized tomography to create a composite model of mantle structure with a grid specific to the data coverage. Data from the dense AUTh-operated seismic network combined with this methodology has great potential to improve seismic images of the complex tectonic structure beneath Greece and, thus, lead to a better understanding of processes along the Western Hellenic Subduction Zone. Expertise: Scholars in seismotectonics of Greece and the broader Aegean region, having access to the AUTh Seismological Station. Americans in Greece: an Anthology Create an anthology with texts of American travel Prof. Vasiliki Drossou – Agakidou, Director of the 1st Neonatal Department and Neonatal Intensive Care, School of Medicine, Ippokrateion General Hospital of Thessaloniki. Establishing Collaborations in Chemistry with AUTh Faculty As Chair of the Chemistry Department at the UA, I would use this visit to explore and establish areas of collaborations between the Chemistry faculty at the UA and AUTh. I would hope to deliver lectures on my own research to the AUTh faculty, as well as discuss research interests of other members of the UA Chemistry department. Expertise: My research interests focus on organic chemistry and correspond well with the interests of Professors Litinas (non-natural nucleosides and metal-catalyzed organic reactions); Koumbis (Metal-catalyzed synthesis of biaryl compounds); and Lykakis (mesoporous material-supported catalysts). Other professors in my department work on biochemistry, inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry, nanoparticles and their medical applications.
