NASSCO employs about 2,300 hourly production employees and 1,300 salary, including 380 engineers. The shipyard encompasses 86 acres located on San Diego Bay. Work at NASSCO is a 24-hour operation, done in three shifts. Its book of business includes Navy and commercial new construction and repair. In 2010, NASSCO contributed more than $1.3 billion in economic benefit to the U.S. economy in the form of wages and supplier spending. NASSCO is located in the historic San Diego neighborhood of Barrio Logan, where it spends more than $125 million on goods and services with local businesses. The company’s annual payroll for 2010 was $249 million. NASSCO delivers high quality naval and commercial vessels on schedule and on budget. Since 2006, NASSCO has delivered 11 mission-ready T-AKE dry cargo ammunition ships to the U.S. Navy. The only full-service shipyard on the west coast, NASSCO has delivered the most new designs of any shipyard in the United States in the last decade. In 2010, NASSCO delivered four ships to the U.S. fleet – two T-AKE dry cargo ammunition ships and two commercial product carriers. General Dynamics NASSCO is one of the few local facilities capable of providing maintenance to the more than 50 U.S. Navy ships home ported in San Diego. NASSCO’s skilled team of ship repair personnel enables San Diego’s ability to support the needs of the U.S. military. In the past decade, NASSCO has designed, constructed, and delivered 11 commercial ships to three Jones Act customers, more than any U.S. shipyard. That brings to nearly 60, the number of commercial ships the company has constructed. These commercial vessels have encompassed containerships, product carriers, RO/ROs and more. Invested more than $300 million in facility improvements over the last decade. This included upgrades to the shipyard’s steel production, heavy lift and outfitting capabilities, plus a $45 million investment in a environmentally-friendly blast and paint facility. During the course of the decade-long T-AKE Program, General Dynamics NASSCO has implemented more than 20,000 ideas to drive down costs and improve quality as part of its continuing commitment to the efficient production of world-class ships for the U.S. Navy. NASSCO’s $300,000 investment in its recycling program has diverted 234 tons of recyclable material from the landfill since it began operation. All storm water runoff at the shipyard facility is captured, eliminating its discharge to San Diego Bay. To date, more than 100 million gallons of storm water discharge has been diverted to the city sewer system for treatment and disposal. The shipyard includes 13,520 lineal feet of “tracks” that the cranes travel on, or 2.6 miles. ###
