E-portfolio: Anemia
I choose to write my paper on Iron deficiency anemia. This topic was of interest
to me because it is an illness one of my closes friend is diagnosed with. Anemia is a
condition of not having enough healthy red blood cells to deliver oxygen throughout the
body tissues. The blood cells may lack hemoglobin, the protein that gives blood its red
color. Hemoglobin is a main part of red blood cells and binds oxygen. If your
hemoglobin is abnormal or low the cells in your body will not get enough oxygen. The
symptoms of iron deficiency anemia are very mild and in many cases there are no
symptoms. If symptoms develop they may include, headaches, pale skin color, dizziness,
shortness of breath, brittle nails, sore tongue, weight loss and fatigued these occur
because organs are not getting what they need to function properly.
In addition too iron deficiency anemia, there are four types of anemia:
Aplastic Anemia: when your bone marrow fails to produce enough ted blood
cells.
Megaloblastic Anemia: Blood disorder marked by the appearance of very large
red blood cells.
Heamolytic Anemia: A form of anemia due to hemolysis.
Pernicious Anemia: Decreases in red blood cells when body can’t absorb enough
vitamins B-12.
Treatment for anemia depends on the cause, type, and severity of the condition.
Some of the treatments may include dietary changes or supplements, medicines, or
surgery to treat blood loss. Goal treatment is to increase the amount of oxygen that carries
the blood. This is possible by raising hemoglobin levels or red blood cells.
Anemia can be avoid by one eating and adequate diet that includes enough ironrich foods for example Pork, Seafood, Beans, Dried fruit and Red meat. Some are at great
risk of anemia because of family history, genetics, and illness. Most common groups of
people to get anemia are women this is because women lose blood during menstruation,
Vegetarians are also at a great risk of anemia if they do not eat iron-rich foods, and other
set of group for high risk of anemia are frequent blood donors because of low
hemoglobin.
