OPEN CIRCLE ARTS WORKSHOPS: Social Fabric
A Collaborative Embroidery Project facilitated by Dee

Social Fabric: Portraits of Kilkenny Women is a project
initiated by the women of Open Circle Arts, Co. Kilkenny.
The Open Circle participants invited women from
Kilkenny to join them in the creation of a collaborative
embroidered artwork facilitated by textile artist Dee
Harte in February 2014. Due to great demand Social
Fabric has become an ongoing community project with
thanks to Kilkenny Arts Office, the Department of Community and Culture (Kilkenny County Council) and
International Women’s Day. The project is both collaborative and distinctly individual and has this far
resulted in a collection of 60 portraits. The workshops create a space in the lives of all who take part to

Jazz in Kilkenny
On Friday 14th November ONASSIS jazz piano trio will have a special guest - the renowned Irish jazz
guitarist Tommy Halferty - joining them for the night which will lead to some very high octane, high energy,
high quality improvisational musings on the general jazz canon.
And on Saturday 29th November Billy Byrnes is celebrating its 50th Birthday in style by going back in time
with ONASSIS 9 piece disco band extravaganza.
With a set of solid gold disco floor-fillers from the BeeGees, Jacksons, Earth wind and Fire, Chic, Kool and
the Gang and all the rest, with great vocals from Bobbie Carey and Alberto Kupper, three horns and a
grooving rhythm section - I guarantee that you will dance. However I warn you that the set is two hours
long and specially tailored for the aerobically very fit, or very inebriated. Take your pick. Or just pace
yourself.
ONASSIS haven't played in Kilkenny for over a year and we are now an even tighter, groovier band than
ever before after a series of gigs in the Sugar Club in Dublin and lots of private events. If you like to dance
or indeed boogie, you can't miss this. And of course it'll be nine musicians right in your face, given the size

Subtitle European Film Festival coming to Kilkenny

Tony Servillo in Paolo Sorrentino's enrapturing hymn to Rome, La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty)
This year's Subtitle European Film festival in Kilkenny city will screen new films from Norway, Sweden,
Germany, Finland, and Romania between November 24 and 30.
Subtitle is the world’s only festival of exclusively European subtitled films. The opening film is the
Dardenne brothers’ powerful drama, Two Days, One Night, starring Marion Cotillard, which was
shown earlier this year at the IFI.
The festival closes with The Tribe, the Ukrainian drama which won the Grand Prix at Cannes earlier this
year.
Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy's debut feature focuses on a gang of deaf-mute students whose extra-curricular
activities include robbery, prostitution and aggravated assault.
Highlights of this year’s programme include a number of Irish premieres, among them the Norwegian film
Nokas, A Coffee in Berlin from Germany, Heart of a Lion from Finland, Stockholm Stories from Sweden and
the Spanish comedy, Three Many Weddings.
Polish masterpiece Ida, Paolo Sorrentino’s stunning, fictional homage to Rome, La Grande Bellezza or The
Great Beauty, and Romanian Silver-Bear-winning drama, Child’s Pose will also be shown.
Over 25 guests will attend including Dutch star Carice Van Houten (Black Book, Game of Thrones), Danish
actors Kim Bodnia (The Bridge, Love Is All You Need), Morten Suurballe (The Killing, The Bridge) and Allan
Hyde (True Blood).
Also making appearances are Spanish rising star Laia Costa, French-Algerian actor, Slimane Dazi (A Prophet,
Only Lovers Left Alive) and the award-winning German actor Richard Sammel (Inglorious Basterds, Casino
Royale). One of Russia's finest actors, Yuri Kolokolnikov, who featured prominently in this season's Game
of Thrones, will also be in Kilkenny.
Festival venues include The Set at Langton’s, the intimate Cleere’s. The Cinemobile will show Pioneer from
Norway, Of Horses and Men from Iceland and a ‘secret screening’ from Finland. Free admission (tickets

Screenprinting (Weekend 29th & 30th November. 10am-4pm €170)
This is a beginners or refreshers screenprinting class for visual artists. You will learn how to make
screenprints with photographic or hand drawn imagery. Cleaning and coating the screen, exposing the
image, and registration and printing will all be covered.
Introduction to Drypoint and Non-Toxic Etching. (Weekend 22nd & 23rd November 10am – 4pm €170)
An intensive two-day course for visual artists and curious beginners. Over
the two days participants will learn the essentials of Intaglio
printmaking and then enjoy experimenting with colour, texture and technique
through a range of different printmaking methods. Participants will leave
with a new set of skills, a knowledge of Non-Toxic printmaking methods and
an array of beautiful prints!
Friday Workshops
Screenprinting for Graphic Designers & Illustrators (2 Fridays, 21st & 28th November.10am-4pm €180)
A course for professionals in the field of visual communications who want to get back to handproduced products while keeping their digital skills. The course will go through the stages of producing
screenprinted materials starting from digital designs and how to prepare files to get them ready for

Butler Gallery: Amy Walsh ‘The Talking Earth
October 18 – December 14, 2014
Following an artist residency with the Broken Hill Art Exchange in New South Wales in Australia.
Amy Walsh will present an exhibition of video projections, installations and a series of photographs. This
work explores our relationship to place and time by showing the movement of the stars against the
Australian night sky, evidencing our place within this larger system.
Amy Walsh lives and works in Dublin. Her practice is primarily in video, photography and digital media. She
is a lecturer in Dublin Institute of Technology.

This is a full day workshop introducing traditional processes of BATIK, and an ancient fabric dyeing

methods working on paper and cotton fabric, with up to three layers of wax and three colours.

exhibition Second Skin, which presents new fashion collections by four Irish designers.
This topical exhibition highlights sustainability in the fashion industry, focusing on using
local textiles and production. We have a season full of exciting talks and workshops
programmed and we hope to see you soon.
EXHIBITION: Second Skin
7 Nov – 25 Jan 2015
Exploring the links between consumption and production, Second Skin has sought to
develop collaborations between Irish fashion designers, woollen mills and textile
producers, digital fabric producers, tailors, retailers and upcyclers. The exhibition will
include a mixture of pieces from existing collections and newly commissioned designs
resulting from collaborations. The exhibition will also feature an interactive and
participative space exploring recent international developments in sustainable fashion
production. Second Skin posed a challenge to four Irish fashion labels - Jennifer Rothwell,
Joanne Hynes, NATALIEBCOLEMAN and Lennon Courtney - to design, source and produce
a garment or range of clothing on the island of Ireland and to document the
opportunities and challenges in doing so. In the realisation of these garments, designers
collaborated with and were supported by third level institutes, organisations and
producers in Dublin, Donegal, Derry, Kilkenny and Wicklow.

From the IAR Autumn 2014 Edition: Winter in Brazil, Kilkenny Artist Elizabeth Cope
From the IAR Autumn 2014 Edition:
Elizabeth Cope has returned from a productive season painting in South America; Alannah Hopkin
previews the chromatic results to go on view this autumn at the Origin Gallery, Dublin
I paint anywhere and everywhere, and always from life’ says Elizabeth Cope. ‘The painting evolves as I
work. I usually paint what’s around me, I just paint serendipitously, if you like.’ The result is, not
surprisingly, characterized by spontaneity and energy, often with a humorous touch. Decorative and
figurative, the domestic interiors, animals, plant life, streetscapes, portraits and self-portraits are a record
of Cope’s world, a world in which there are no boundaries between her everyday domestic life and her art.
She cites Matisse and Raoul Dufy as influences, and reveres Monet, but over her long career her own
flamboyant style has become unmistakable.
In 1972 following classes at the National College of Art & Design in Dublin, Cope went to London to the Sir
John Cass School of Art in Whitechapel, where she enjoyed working with experienced life models, including
the ‘naked civil servant’, Quentin Crisp. Further study at the Chelsea School of Art was followed by a return
to rural Ireland, punctuated by periods of travel. In the 1990s she was Trócaire’s artist-in-residence in
Somalia and in Honduras.
Cope showed at the Solomon Gallery for over twenty-five years, has shown widely in London, with
occasional exhibitions further afield, often related to her travels. ‘I think you have to travel if you live in
Ireland’, she says with typical candour. Her show at Dublin’s Origin Gallery follows a ten-week stay in Brazil
last winter, in which she immersed herself totally in the new environment.
Home for Cope since 1991 is Shankill Castle, Co Kilkenny, which she says has ‘about 42 rooms’ (and a
ghost). She is almost as well known for living in a castle, as she is for her paintings. She uses the castle’s
reception rooms as a permanent gallery, and works in the interstices of a busy domestic life shared with
her husband Geoffrey, who farms the castle’s 117 acres. There are artists’ residencies to organize, and
various tenants, as well as extensive gardens to tend, while Reuben, one of her three grown-up children,
also works on the farm. Despite having a spacious studio loft beyond the stable yard, Cope also likes to
work in the gardens, the conservatory, and the hayshed, often rising as early as 5am in summer to paint.
The importance of escaping for prolonged periods of intensive work is evident. The Brazilian trip came
about in a typically serendipitous way. It was suggested by one of the castle’s garden workers, a young
Brazilian whose mother, a painter, organized the residency. Cope stayed in Rua Salgado, the street seen in
Jaragua’s Peak (Fig 4) in an area to the northwest of Sao Paolo. Pink House, Rua Sepetiba (Fig 1) depicts a
pretty pink building near to her base, whichturned out to be an old folks’ home.
This modern city of 20 million inhabitants was about as far from rural Kilkenny as you can get. Mornings
were spent painting, and afternoons visiting galleries and museums. As in Honduras, the overhead power
lines and the exuberant vegetation caught her eye. She usually worked outdoors, forgoing an easel, and
using fast-drying oils as her only concession to travel.
While in Brazil she took a seven-hour bus ride to Rio de Janeiro. On Copacabana Beach (Fig 5) she spotted
an attractive palm tree near a makeshift football net: ‘I sat under it on an old coat with my paints, then I
noticed two or three hobos under another tree: in certain situations I can paint very quickly.’
Parrots in Parque de Aves (Fig 3) was painted in the bird park beside Cope’s hotel on a visit to the Iguaçu
Falls. She often works in zoos, and the exhibition will also feature etchings of birds and animals in the Sao
Paolo Zoo.
Elizabeth Cope’s work is confident, colourful, and brimming with energy. She has the ability to find a
picture in unusual places – a suburban street, a quiet corner of Copacabana, a bird park rather than the
spectacular Iguaçu Falls. Her belief in art as a subconscious, spontaneous activity coexists with a wellhoned sense of composition. Painting is second nature to this artist, painting without boundaries, without
concepts, but rich in the sheer joy of being.

Comhairle na nÓg comprising of young people aged 12-18 years, who are elected at an AGM every year to
represent their respective electoral area on issues affecting young people in that area.
Kilkenny Comhairle na nÓg is made up of young representatives from the four electoral areas in Kilkenny:
Castlecomer, Kilkenny East & West and Piltown. The group meets on average every three weeks to discuss
issues and establish a way with local decision makers to resolve those issues that affect the majority of
young people.

Curatorial Internship Opportunities at The Hunt Museum
The Hunt Museum is currently seeking applications for 3 and 6-month unpaid internships in its awardwinning Education and Public Programmes Department to commence in Dec 2014/January 2015 and
Summer 2015. Shorter-term internships (3 months) are also available.
The Hunt Museum offers several internships throughout the year to students, recent graduates and earlycareer Museum professionals. Interns get hands-on experience in the day-to-day operation of The Hunt
Museum’s Education Department or Administration Department and have the opportunity to develop a
project during the period of their internship under the supervision of department heads, Dr Dominique
Bouchard, Hunt Museum Curator of Education and Outreach. Recent Education and Public Programme
Internship alumni have found paid employment at institutions including the British Museum (UK), Lowry
Arts Centre (UK), Bishop’s Stopford Museum (UK), the Centre Pompidou (France), and the Waikato
Museum (New Zealand).
We are currently seeking applications for the Education and Public Programmes Curatorial Internship.
Curatorial Internship – Education and Public Programmes (6 or 12 months)
Curatorial interns play a key role in the development of The Hunt’s public programme, interpretation and
education initiatives. Interns will have opportunities to gain experience in project management,
programme development, interpretation, audience development, and digital media. Past interns have
created films, helped curate exhibitions, create and manage festivals and events, contribute to
interpretation, present their work at museum conferences and have even published articles!

The final audition workshop for a new play - Lucinda Sly, based on the last public hanging of a woman in
Carlow - will take place in the GBS THeatre, Carlow, on Sunday November 23rd - 2 to 5 pm.
Rehearsals, when cast, will take place in Carlow - evenings and some weekends - from Jan to March
Tour will run weekends March to end of May including a week in the Civic Tallaght plus Carlow, Naas,

to profile aspects of Ireland’s biodiversity and to provide a platform for photographers and naturalists to

Original Writing Winter Flash Fiction Competition
Interested in seeing your writing online? Testing your writing skills? In that case welcome to Original
Writing Flash Fiction competitions. We've had a fantastic response to our competitions so we're running
another one for writers, featuring short pieces on different themes. This time our theme will be "Making a
Difference".
The Competition
Write a piece of between 750 and 1000 words on the theme of "Making a Difference". It can be satirical,
serious,humorous, poignant or whatever appeals to you.
Prizes
The 5 finalists will have their writing published on the Original Writing website, a great showcase for your
work. The overall winner will also have an additional article about their work on our website and blog.

Playwrights are invited to submit 15 minute Radio Plays on the theme "A Bump In The Road" for selection.
A number of Playwrights will be selected to take part in a developmental process under the guidance of
Eugene O'Brien, where they will have the opportunity to develop and fine tune their scripts over a three
day process.

Theatre Forum’s Touring Board was set up last year to list theatre, music and dance productions that are
available to tour in the months and year ahead. It’s designed as a quick and easy way for producers and
promoters to generate enquiries and bookings as well as being a programming resource for venue
managers. The Touring Board is in the public area of our website so anyone can view it. Obviously, the
more productions that are listed, the more valuable this resource is for venue managers and producers
alike.
At various meetings in the last few weeks, Venue Managers have confirmed that they’re now urgently

Redhills Building Peace through the Arts: Re-imaging Communities
Redhills BPttA Steering Committee is now inviting expressions of interest from artists or groups of artists
for a public artwork to be sited at the top of the Village Green, Redhills.
Theme : ‘The Village Green’
Redhill’s village green is quite unusual as this type of large central communal space is not a typical feature
of Irish villages. The people of Redhills (both Catholic and Protestant) feel that the green represents a
shared space and symbolises the improvements in community relations which have taken place in recent
years
.
The value of the commission is £25,000 (inclusive of VAT). This must also allow for all necessary design,
treatment of surfaces, installation, erection and all fixings to secure the feature etc. There is no payment to
artists submitting the initial Expression of Interest (Stage 1). Up to 3 artists will be selected to proceed to
Stage 2 and to develop a full proposal with sketches and a maquette. £500 is available for each artist

Upcoming Deadline for UK & Ireland Residencies at Digital Arts Studios, Belfast
The DAS residency programme encourages and supports artists in the creation of innovative, challenging
and experimental work by providing a creative hub with access to a range of facilities and resources.
The next UK and Ireland residencies at DAS will run from the 2nd of February to the 30th of May.

What is this Residency?
The Digital Art Studios is based in the cultural Cathedral Quarter of Belfast City Centre and provides a
professional standard of facilities for artists working with digital media or technologies. There are four
residencies available in each residency period.
What does it offer?
A residency at the Digital Arts Studios offers four months in which to work on a specific project of your
choice and to develop your skills and artistic practice. DAS will provide artists with a productive and
dynamic environment to produce work and offer support to artists in realising the aims of their residency.
What are the facilities?
Artists in residence have 24-hour access to the studios, with their own personal workstation within a
shared studio environment. Each workstation has a Quad-Core Mac Pro computer programmed with
relevant software such as Final Cut Studio 7 and Ableton Live 8. Residents also have access to a range of
professional video and audio equipment, software, technical support and specialised training where
available. All residents are entitled to attend any DAS workshops free of charge and are exempt from

Reminder: Touring and Dissemination of work scheme
Thursday, 4 December is the deadline for applications to the Touring and Dissemination of Work Scheme
for tours beginning in the period July to December 2015. The Advance Planning strand for this scheme has
the same deadline for tours from January to December 2016.
As with previous rounds of the scheme we have agreed with our colleagues in the Arts Council of Northern
Ireland to make it easier to extend tours across the border. This means that applications from the North
and the South can include dates in either jurisdiction and if the application is successful, we will support all
legs of the tour.
This is an incentive to companies and venues to work together in both jurisdictions to enable excellent
work to be seen on the whole island. Since its introduction in 2010 the Touring schemes have been based
on the principle of collaboration between those who produce and those who present work to audiences.
So we hope that the two Arts Councils working together on this will help foster stronger ties between
artists in the two jurisdictions.

Arts Audiences is running Pre-Application Workshops aimed at any organisation or individual who is
considering applying for funding under the upcoming Touring and Dissemination of Work Scheme. These
workshops will cover questions about how to set audience targets, how to incorporate Northern Ireland in
a tour and whether you are ready to apply this round. Two workshops will take place in Highlanes Gallery,
Drogheda on Monday November 10 and in Dublin on Tuesday November 11. These workshops are aimed
at those who have applied before, and/or toured before, as well as those who are new to application. The
window for applications opens on November 4, and your ideas for touring would ideally be formulated by
then and you will be getting ready to make a detailed application. The workshop is there for applicants
who have developed their ideas, to help with specific areas, and answer questions.

The Golden Fleece Award - Call for Applications for the 2015 Award
The Golden Fleece Award aims to support and promote the diversity of contemporary Irish creativity in the
arts and crafts. Its mission is to help artists of innovative talent, needing support at strategic stages of their
careers. Applicants will normally have been born on the island of Ireland and must maintain a strong
connection with Ireland. They should be artists or researchers working in the area of figurative visual art or
of the traditional crafts.
Closing date for applications: Friday, 21st November 2014

Arts Council Launch Audience Mapping Tool
Profiling potential audiences: Arts Council mapping tool helps arts venues profile
their potential audiences
How many people live within a 30 minute drive of my venue? What’s the percentage of young people? or
retired people? What ethnic minorities are represented? …
There is now a user-friendly new way for venues all over Ireland to answer these questions and others like
them…..
A new tool developed by the Arts Council uses census data to plot the demographic profile of populations
living within varying drive-time distances of 73 arts venues across the country.
Developed by the Arts Council in conjunction with the All Ireland Research Observatory (AIRO), the new
tool is part of the Arts Council’s renewed focus on spatial and demographic planning and analysis, and
a bid to understand better the public they serve. It should be particularly useful for venue managers and
others who are interested in learning more about potential audiences for programmes and events.
The team from AIRO will be providing training on this and other census mapping tools at the Arts
Audiences Focus on Audiences Day, Dublin Castle, December 9, 2014. You can find details of this at
