Minutes of Board of Director’s Meeting

February 17, 2015

The meeting was called to order by Carol Handlan at 6:05 pm.

Present: Sean Christine, Rich Mease, Bobbi Steininger, Helen Walter, Carol

Handlan, Bruce Johnson, Joyce Hendricks, Dick Hess, Mike Coyne

Absent: None

Others present: Mary Bannon, Paul Williams (arrived at 7:15pm.)

Review and approval of minutes from 1/ 20/15 meeting:

Correction to minutes-re: Commons committee section since an official board vote was not taken at that meeting to approve the volunteers.

Bruce Johnson read the following statement: Under the recently revised by-laws there is now an official Commons Committee whose members are appointed for 3year terms by the SPI Board of Directors (paragraph 9.06). Three people have volunteered to serve on the new committee: Matt Cook as Chair, Richard Mease as

SPI representative and Kelly Buckley. In December 2015 the Board will appoint 3 additional members to the Committee. For the remainder of 2015 Joe Kleinbauer, Bo

Fasold and Bruce Johnson will continue to participate in meetings of the Commons

Committee. Bruce also stated that SPI currently has a contract with Shaffer

Landscapes, Inc. for removal of snow and ice from sidewalk surrounding the

Commons. This contract is renewable on an annual basis.

Bruce Johnson made the motion to approve the committee, seconded by Helen

Walter; vote taken; motion approved.

With that correction, Dick Hess moved to approve minutes, seconded by Mike

Coyne; vote taken; minutes approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Mike Coyne presented the report and answered questions re:

Commons property value, White Christmas payments and grant money for MSM program (addressed in Mary Bannon’s Executive Summary). In a discussion of utilizing an accountant once a month-no decision was made. Mike asked for budget figures from SPI for 2015. Rich Mease moved to approve the treasurer’s report, seconded by Bruce Johnson; vote taken; treasurer’s report approved.

Committee Reports:

Main Street Manager: Mary Bannon attended a state-wide MSM meeting with

Bobbi Steininger, the next one to be held in June. She has entered Piano Palooza in a competition sponsored by the PA Downtown Center for a “Townie Award”-which honors a successful promotional event.

Other items discussed were getting hospitals involved in/partnering with downtowns for screenings and healthy lifestyle events. Grants may be available in the future for events such as this.

First Friday event for first year SU students seems to be somewhat successful, but dependent upon weather.

Helen Walter mentioned there are snow removal issues in town not being addressed by the borough. Rich Mease will report the issue at the next borough council meeting.

Mary reported that a representative from the PA Downtown Center will attend our next SPI meeting.

Mary is making business owners aware that there is still façade money available.

Some may be available for plants/flowers for Commons if property owners do not use it.

Promotions Committee: Mary Bannon reported that plants for downtown are a priority to help attract business. Other ideas being considered are: Golden Broom

Award for downtown businesses, “Love the Grove” promotional items, etc. Carol

Handlan requested a budget for promotions prior to next SPI meeting. The billboard

(included in the plan) was discussed and Mike Coyne made the motion to approve

$200/month and $175/updating to maintain one that we have. Rich Mease seconded; vote taken; motion approved.

Events:

Market Street Festival: Joyce Hendricks , chair reported that planning has begun and Mary Bannon will handle vendors. Date is September 26, 2015. The committee is seeking members to help with items such as logistics. A press release seeking new members to the committee will go out in the next few days.

Selinsgrove Chamber of Commerce: Helen Walter reported on February promotions in the downtown and that the Greater Chamber is planning an event for artists in April or May. Helen has asked if the event could be moved to Selinsgrove instead of holding it at the Chamber building on the strip. A meeting will be held after the Chamber luncheon on February 24 to discuss the event further.

Economic Revitalization: Mike Coyne reported that a meeting will be held on

February 18 with a representative from the SBDC.

Design Committee: During a discussion of historic preservation of bldgs. in

Selinsgrove, Mary Bannon reported that Scott Schaffer was denied the designation for his building on Mkt. St. because of previous work done there which damaged the original interior.

Discovery Trails: Bill Burd has agreed to take over the project.

Selinsgrove Commons: Bruce Johnson reported that the newly established

Commons Endowment Committee (see SPI by laws paragraphs 13.01-13.05) held its inaugural meeting on Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, Committee members attending were:

Mike Coyne, representative for SPI, Mike Flock for the Selinsgrove Area Community

Foundation, Bruce Johnson for Commons Committee, Ann Madison and Donna

Shuck. In addition, Joe Kleinbauer and Skip Weider were also present. Janie Coyne took minutes at the meeting. The committee voted unanimously to invite Joe

Kleinbauer and Marvin Rudnitsky to become members of the SC Endowment

Committee, also voting Joe Kleinbauer as Chair upon appointment/approval to the committee by SPI Board of Directors. Bruce then moved that Marvin Rudnitsky and

Joe Kleinbauer be appointed to the Commons Endowment Committee, seconded by

Bobbi Steininger. Vote taken; motion approved.

New Business: Mike Coyne stated that he will bring a recommendation re: SPI’s contribution to the Selinsgrove Pool to the March meeting for the board’s consideration.

Potential SPI Board members: Carol Handlan reported that Bill Burd, Donna Shuck and Sarah Lauver have been contacted.

Rich Mease asked if SPI could get its events to be covered in Inside PA magazine, a publication of the Daily Item. The promotions committee will assist with getting events into that and other publications.

Adjournment: With no further business to discuss, Carol Handlan adjourned the meeting at 7:40 pm.
