Background and Context

The Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team sits within the Directorate for Learning

Enhancement and Academic Practice. The team is led by the Head of Technology

Enhanced Learning. The TEL team provides direction in and support for the innovative use of educational technologies across the disciplines, to enhance the student learning experience and to support and inspire high quality teaching and learning developments which reflect the research-led pedagogies of the university. The team assists the Faculties in meeting the strategic priorities for TEL set out in the University’s Learning, Teaching and

Assessment Strategy and its ambitious Curriculum 2016 Change Programme. It additionally takes a lead in both the evaluation and the development of pedagogic practice related to the use of technology.

The Curriculum 2016 Change Programme commits Hull to an ambitious programme of innovations in teaching and learning, supported and enhanced by technology. Reporting to the Head of Technology Enhanced Learning, the Technology Enhanced Learning Advisor will play a central role in helping the institution to meet these commitments, providing pedagogical support, guidelines and recommendations for the expansion of our blended and distance portfolio and for the use of technology to enhance both campus based and online teaching and student learning. The role is creative and challenging, and requires a good knowledge of the pedagogical principles underpinning academic practice within higher education settings and how technology can be used to support these principles to enhance student learning. The post holder should also be skilled in technologies used in higher education learning and teaching practice and experience of managing technology enhanced learning related projects. The post will appeal to a highly experienced, knowledgeable, skilled and motivated individual wishing to work as part of a team that actively supports

learning and teaching activities across the University, to meet strategic priorities and to improve the student learning experience.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

The post-holder will use their extensive knowledge of the pedagogical principles of academic practice and experience to act alongside the Head of TEL in an outward faculty and department facing capacity to oversee and deliver support at the faculty, team and individual level in the use of technology to enhance teaching and student learning. The post holder will provide expert advice, guidance, consultancy and support for academic staff and will have the experience, knowledge and skills necessary to work with and to advise staff at a range of levels and from a range of disciplines. The post-holder will be responsible for liaison between the central TEL team and a range of Faculty-based groups including Faculty

Learning Teaching and Assessment Committees, faculty-level curriculum development groups and programme and subject area teams. S/he will also be responsible for managing innovative TEL projects and related project staff, as and when appropriate. The post-holder will additionally work with the Head of Teaching Development to support academic staff development as part of the PCAP and CPD framework. An extensive understanding of pedagogical theory and application to academic practice, excellent communication and consultancy skills, a high level of credibility within the academic environment, experience in managing TEL related projects and proficiency in the use of technology are therefore prerequisites for this post.

The post will be based on the Hull campus but may involve travel to the Scarborough campus from time to time. As well as working with professional and academic staff based in the Faculties, the post holder will be required to liaise with other technical and support teams

(including the Information and Communication Technologies Directorate and some external suppliers) to ensure coordination and integration with other relevant business processes and initiatives.

Overall Purpose of the Role

The role holder will:

Be an experienced professional who is expected to exercise a significant degree of specialist and independent responsibility.

Have gained a professional and/or academic qualification and have a good understanding of pedagogical theory underpinning academic practice in higher education settings

Have extensive specialist experience, particularly in the management of technology enhanced learning related projects.

Be involved in planning and ensuring progress within established procedures and clearly defined university policy by providing a high level of specialist advice and expertise to support the Faculty or Departmental activities.

Contribute to the longer term planning in accordance with the wider University strategy.

Advise senior University management on policy, functional or service priorities and develop new procedures and polices within existing values.

There may be a requirement to plan and organise individual and/or team activity to integrate and coordinate work across different parts of the University, faculty or department.

Main Work Activities

To build and maintain excellent working relationships with faculty-based stakeholders

To take a leading role in supporting the management of TEL projects

To provide expert pedagogical advice, guidance, consultancy and support for academic staff and teams to integrate technological innovations into teaching activities.

To provide specialist and tailored training sessions for staff who wish to employ a new technology or develop a particular aspect of their teaching and learning using technology.

To guide and prioritise the resource design and development work of the Band 6

Learning Technologists in line with the needs of academic staff and teams.

To deputise for the Head of TEL or Head of Teaching Development, as necessary, on

Faculty Learning and Teaching Committees and Faculty curriculum development groups, to ensure that faculties are supported and advised in line with the strategic priorities of the University and to deputise for the Head of TEL, where required, on University level working groups and committees.

To support and work with academic teams to communicate the findings of TEL-related developments and projects across the University and beyond using a range of approaches including the bi-annual University Learning and Teaching Conferences.

To work with the Head of TEL and Head of Teaching Development to support academic staff development as part of the PCAP and Hull CPD framework

To work with the Head of TEL to promote the use of the TEL team and its services

To obtain feedback from service users and to devise, undertake and oversee the implementation of data gathering from services and projects to inform future developments and to enhance student learning

To maintain awareness of relevant developments beyond the university, through international, national and regional collaboration, in order to benefit from the knowledge and experience of others

To bid (with academic or other LEAP staff) for external funding for and to manage innovative TEL projects that have been agreed by the Head of TEL (and to manage any related project staff as and when appropriate).

To initiate and lead internal networks, communities of practice and partnerships within and across faculties to provide peer support and development opportunities in the use of technology in teaching and learning activities.

Under the guidance of the Head of TEL, to develop new, or adapt existing University policies and procedures in relation to the use of technology for teaching and learning purposes

To play a key role in the operational and strategic planning processes of the TEL team within LEAP.

Additionally the post holder will be required to:

 Fulfil the employees’ duties described in the University’s health and safety policies and co-operate with the health and safety arrangements in place within the department.

May be required to undertake specific health and safety roles on request e.g. Display screen equipment assessor, departmental safety officer, fire warden
