2014 | Issue 2014

Thursday Morning Keynote Speaker

Chef Jeff

Henderson

America's Most Inspirational

Culinary Star and creator of the

Food Network show The Chef Jeff

Project.

Chef Jeff could have easily become another statistic. Instead, he learned from his mistakes and became not only a top chef, but an inspiration to many.

It was in prison where Chef Jeff found his passion for cooking. After serving nearly ten years for a drug conviction, he used his street smarts to make his way up from dishwasher to executive chef of Café Bellagio in Las

Vegas. His story was first told in the New

York Times best-selling memoir, Cooked: My

Journey from the Streets to the Stove, which is being adapted into a film starring Will Smith.

His newest book, If You Can See It, You Can

Be It is set for release in November 2013.

Class of 2012

, which honors African

Americans for the positive contributions they are making in shaping the futures of others.

Thursday Afternoon General

Session

A TECHNOLOGY SMACKDOWN!

This session is designed to train counselors to better communicate, collaborate, share, network, socialize, and deliver resources through the multitude of technology that is out there and keeps growing daily! Panelists demonstrate their favorite technology tools that enhance their school counseling programs, and attendees are invited to share their favorite technology tools as well.

Discover the vast amount of quality technology services available to enhance your school counseling program and the importance of integrating technology into your school counseling curriculum. Focus on the benefits of using social networking to interact with students and the community.

Understand the importance of social networking with other school counseling and educational leaders to maximize leadership skills and develop a base knowledge of worldwide educational matters. Walk away with tools you can readily use in your school, from pre-K to the university level.

Meet The Technology Smackdown

Panelists!

On his Food Network show, The Chef Jeff

Project, he took six at-risk youths under his wing to teach them culinary skills and to give them the chance at a new life. His mission is to give back and help others reach their full potential. And because he does this so often and so well, TheGrio.com distinguished

Henderson by naming him to its illustrious

“Grio’s100: History Makers in the Making”,

01. Yoga Calm®: An Integrated Approach to Wellness 1

6:00p.m. – 9:00p.m. Tuesday evening March 4 and 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM March 5. $180.00

LEVEL: ALL

12 EILA HOUR WORKSHOP

Using the scientific practices of mindfulness, social/emotional learning, and yoga-based movement for grades Pre-K-12, Yoga Calm: An Integrated

Approach to Wellness utilizes hands-on learning, reflection, and strategies for implementation. Participants learn to utilize breathing exercises, simple yoga-based movement, and social/emotional skill-development activities to incorporate in their work with children and teens.

Using highly experiential activities, participants develop ways to unite their classrooms, communities, and teach self-regulation through the Five Yoga

Calm Principles of Stillness, Listening, Strength, Grounding, and Community. Case histories from school counseling are used to highlight and develop successful strategies and techniques useful for working with a broad range of student needs.

Classrooms across the country implementing Yoga Calm into their school day have seen an increased time on task/self-regulation, decreased behavioral referrals, improved feelings of community and class attendance, improved auditory comprehension, and a 19 decibel decrease in classroom volume. Yoga Calm techniques improve subject retention and test scores through the development of greater focus and concentration.

Self-confidence and self-esteem are increased through enhancing communication, trust, empathy, teamwork, and leadership skills.
