2016 Scholarship funding guidelines Eligibility EUCN Tuition Fees Scholarship (Hons, MA, PhD) and Research Award (MA, PhD) Applicants must be enrolled (or enrolling) for a post-graduate course of study at an EUCN partner university for the 2015 academic year. (Hons, MA, PhD or equivalent for Fee scholarships- MA, PhD or equivalent for research awards) Thesis topics must focus on the European Union and preference will be given to student working on one of the EUCN’s research areas. The Trans-national Integration Across Region (CIAR) research areas are: Trans-national people movements and citizenship – Research topics should relate to international migration and its impact on the provision of economic, social and political rights in Europe and/or the Asia Pacific. Trans-national economic, social and administrative integration – Research topics should focus on the negotiation of regional integration agreements, including those on regional labour standards, security, protection of intellectual property, transnational investment, and protection of social and economic rights in Europe and/or the Asia Pacific. Trans-national Security – Research topics should relate to either traditional concerns of inter-state cooperation and conflict or issues of trans-national environmental degradation, pathogenic contagion, criminality (corruption, transnational organized crime, money laundering, drugs, arms human trafficking) and terrorism in the Asia Pacific and/or Europe The Normative Power Europe (NPE) research area: The main objectives of this project are to undertake sustainable interdisciplinary cutting-edge collaborative research to advance a research agenda on the EU's ability to influence norms, values and ideas beyond its borders. Research is focused on three themes: EU Development Policy and Humanitarianism The EU and Global Discourses on Fundamental Values and Equality Normative Power Europe and EU External Outreach Applications will be assessed on their relevance to the study of the European Union, their alignment with the research themes, objectives, and the central aims of the EUCN. Students must be non EU Citizens or possess NZ Citizenship or permanent residence (proof will be required). Students are not eligible for this award if they are an EU citizens and do not possess permanent residence or citizenship in New Zealand. If your enrolment status changes or you suspend your enrolment, you are required to contact the assistant project coordinator to discuss the impact on your eligibility for your scholarship. Taught MA Tuition Fee Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled (or enrolling) in the Taught Master in European Studies (MEuro) at the University of Canterbury Only courses offered at the NCRE will be funded by the course fees scholarship Applications will be assessed on their relevance to the study of the European Union If your enrolment status changes or you suspend your enrolment, we require you to contact the NCRE Administrator to discuss the impact on your eligibility for your scholarship. NCRE PG Tuition Fee Scholarship (Hons, MA by thesis only, PhD) and NCRE PG Research Award (MA, PhD) Applicants must be enrolled (or enrolling) for a post-graduate course of study (Hons, MA or PhD, or equivalent) at the University of Canterbury for the 2015 Academic Year. Only courses offered at the NCRE will be funded by the course fees scholarship Applications will be assessed on their relevance to the study of the European Union If your enrolment status changes or you suspend your enrolment, we require you to contact the NCRE Administrator to discuss the impact on your eligibility for your scholarship. The Application Fill in the application form available on the EUCN website www.eucnetwork.org.nz. Each application is only valid for one scholarship type. If you are applying to more than one, you will have to submit multiple applications. Compile your application form and the required documentation into ONE pdf file. You can do this easily by scanning all your documents together into one file. Upload the pdf file containing the requested documents and submit your application. Required documentations to collate with your applications are: Your CV. The CV must be no longer than three pages in length and should focus on both academic and employment information. Applicants for one of the research awards must include a suggested budget including estimated costs and timing (e.g. tuition fees, travel costs, etc.). Please use the template provided in the annex. Your academic transcript from your university, containing your academic history. This must either be signed or certified by the university or an academic supervisor. Your Referee must complete the online form or you must attach a pdf form to your application. The reference must be supplied in pdf form with an original signature and must come from an academic referee at the university you are enrolled in or from a EUCN representative. Please note that only complete application will be considered. Deadline for applications is 08 November 2015. Course fee scholarships Scholarship Payments Course fee scholarships will be paid out in the form of a scholarship payment directly to your institution. In order to maintain a complete set of documentation for our international accounting procedures, we require that you send us receipts for your course fees. Please keep on file all documents relating to your enrolment; including invoices, receipts and Studylink correspondence to ensure easy payment Conditions of the Scholarship All scholarship recipients will be expected to demonstrate progress with their study during the scholarship period and are required to present the findings of their research within an EUCN/NCRE context, for example a conference or seminar and NCRE scholarship recipients are required to regularly attend EU focused seminars held at the NCRE The scholarship is only able to pay for tuition fees, other enrolment costs and amounts greater than the funding threshold mentioned above, will need to be covered by the recipient This scholarship is only eligible for the course of study and topic for which you submitted your application. Topics have to be EU focused to remain eligible. You are asked to submit in writing to the NCRE Administrator any significant course or topic changes. Only one category of funding will be awarded per student (either course fees or research travel) Research awards Research awards are designed to support your research at one of the EUCN partner universities for the 2016 academic year. It can be used to cover travel cost, conference fees, accommodation costs, etc. Travel Contact the NCRE or the EUCN (depending on which scholarship you have been awarded) with travel plans. International & Domestic Travel - you will be put in touch with a travel agent to arrange your travel itinerary. The EUCN/NCRE are required to use the designated travel agent unless another travel provider can offer comparable fares with significant cost savings. When this is complete the EUCN/NCRE will arrange payment up to the agreed award amount. Any extra costs will have to be covered by you with the travel agent directly. International travel arranged through the University of Canterbury allows you to opt for a University of Canterbury travel insurance policy; however neither the University of Canterbury nor the NCRE will be liable for covering the excess. The cost of purchasing insurance can be reimbursed as you are able to arrange separate insurance. However, please note that any dealing with your insurance provider is your sole responsibility and any excess charges on claims will not be reimbursed by the EUCN or the NCRE. You are allowed to include private travel plans in your travel booking as long as all costs for those sections of travel are paid by the recipient directly to the University of Canterbury’s travel agent. The NCRE recommends that you buy appropriate travel insurance for your journey and that you check the government’s Safe Travel website (http://www.safetravel.govt.nz) before you travel. Accommodation & Living costs Option 1: Accommodation can be prepaid by the EUCN/NCRE only if it is possible to book and pay online. Option 2: Please see the reimbursement process as outlined below. The EUCN/NCRE will only be able to offer reimbursements once accommodation has been booked and paid for and appropriate receipts provided. Please note that the reimbursement process may take up to three weeks. Conference Fees Option 1: Please see the reimbursement process as outlined below. Reimbursement process A Payment Request form should be requested from the EUCN/NCRE for the reimbursement of personal expenses. Original receipts are required when requesting a reimbursement that fully supports the reason for the payment. Please ensure that you request a tax invoice when paying for goods or services. It is best practice to keep all original receipts including any boarding passes. Please note that validation of your bank account is required along with the completed Payment Request form. The Payment Request form along with original invoices should be sent to the EUCN/NCRE for processing. You can make more than one Payment Request - your cost will be tracked to ensure you do not go over your awarded allowance. You will be reimbursed for reasonable costs in agreement with EUCN/NCRE staff. Conditions of Research Award Those who receive EUCN/NCRE funding are expected to present the findings of their work in a EUCN/NCRE context such as a conference, seminar or as a working paper available on the NCRE website. Those who receive NCRE funding are expected to regularly attend EU focused seminars held at the University. Only one category of funding will be awarded per student (either course fees or research travel) Annexe Budget Plan Proposal Please complete the following table with your proposed budget (reflecting the budget you submitted in your proposal) and give an indication by calendar month when you expect to use each type of payment and the expected type of payment claim, eg. reimbursement or invoice etc. You will not be held to this plan but it should be your best guess as it will help to inform our forecasting and reporting requirements.
