ACTIVITIES Introduction to American Sign Language Instructor: Renee Scott Mondays and Wednesdays 3-4pm Sarner 66 12 sessions: $50 per person Students will learn the basics of American Sign Language (alphabet, elementary words and phrases and sentence structure). The course aims to have every student conversationally functional by the end of the course. American Sign Language for Beginners Instructor: Renee Scott Thursdays 5:30-6:30pm Robinson Hall 106 6 sessions: $35 per person Students who already have basic exposure to American Sign Language will practice conversing in both Signed English and American Sign Language, learn cultural idioms and gain experience toward developing elementary proficiency. Speed Reading Instructor: Carl Thum January 15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th 2-3:15pm Robinson Hall 14 & 15 4 sessions: $35 per person This course will improve your reading rate and comprehension skills, as well as other study strategies for more effective and efficient academic learning. Face Reading Instructor: Quita Davis Tuesdays 5-6pm Robinson Hall 205 6 sessions: $30 per person Face pattern recognition, or face reading, describes the relationship between facial structure and personality. Facial features indicate our innate strengths, challenges and abilities and explain what makes people "tick" and why. Face reading helps people to better understand and communicate with each other. Guitar for Beginners Instructor: Kerry Rosenthal Mondays 7-8pm Robo 106 6 sessions: $70 per person Learn the fundamentals of the guitar playing and learn to play some traditional tunes, as well as songs you’ve heard on the radio. This is a great class for those who wish to learn enough to play around the campfire (or the dorm room!). Guitars are not provided (a guitar can be rented from Hanover Strings for this class for about $20). Ukulele for Beginners Instructor: Kerry Rosenthal Mondays 8-9pm Robo 106 6 sessions: $70 per person Learn the fundamentals of the ukulele playing and learn to play some traditional tunes. Introduction to Bike Maintenance Instructors: Ari Koeppel, Madi Gamble, Chris McMillan Thursdays 4:30-5:30pm Robinson Hall 14 & 15 6 sessions: $45 per person Learn how to keep your bike in working order! This class will teach students how to make basic repairs to things like brakes, chains, cables, tubes/tires, derailers and more. Bring your own bike, practice on one of ours, or purchase an inexpensive used bike from the Office of Sustainability's Bike Program that you can fix up and keep at the end of the course. Basic supplies such as WD-40 will be provided. Students wishing to replace broken parts may purchase them from the Office of Sustainability through the instructors, or bring them to class themselves. Experience the Qu'ran in Voice, Word and Spirit Instructor: Farzeen Mahmud Thursdays 7-8:30pm Robinson Hall 205 6 sessions: $35 per person The Qur’an has been passed down through history since it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) via the Angel Gabriel by an oral tradition of recitation, which has been preserved until today. This class will teach participants this form of recitation. We’ll explore and reflect on the wisdom in the Qur’an found in the rich mysteries of classical Arabic etymology, the connections to previous scriptures, and the beauty of recitation in the sweet and kind voice of the spirit. We’ll draw on the visual art of calligraphy, to engage with the Recitation (Al-Qur’an), too. The approach will be personal and hopefully together we’ll create an atmosphere for our own spiritual reflection. Anyone is welcome to this gathering. ARTS Introduction to Digital SLR Photography Instructor: Kevin Xiao Tuesdays (beginning 1/22) 7-8pm Sarner 66 6 sessions: $25 This course will cover the mechanics of a digital SLR camera, or DSLR, as well as basic (but important) concepts and techniques used in everyday digital photography. You will get the technical information you need to be at ease with your camera – but also the creative inspiration to take you beyond Instagram. You must provide your own DSLR camera. Beginning Crochet Instructor: Cally Womick Thursdays 7-8pm Robinson Hall 106 6 sessions: $40 per person Crochet, like knitting, is a way of transforming yarn, thread, and other material strands into fabric. In this beginner’s class, we will focus on small projects that provide students with the fundamentals of stitching and pattern-reading necessary to take on greater challenges in the future. Everyone can expect to have at least one finished garment (scarf, cowl, or hat) ready to wear before winter hits! Knitting for Winter Instructor: Anna Knowles Wednesdays 5-6pm Robinson Hall 205 6 sessions: $50 (includes knitting needles and yarn) Have your ears gotten cold walking to class yet? Would you like to keep them toasty with a hat you made yourself? Learn to design and knit things (hats, scarves, cowls and mittens, for example) to keep yourself warm when it's freezing out. This course is appropriate for complete beginners, as well as those who know how to know but want to learn different stitches and techniques or explore knitting design and make themselves a new item. Students will be able to keep supplies and any creations at the end of the course. FOOD AND DRINK Light Speed kitchen Crash Course Instructor: Kunyi Li Sundays 4:30-6:30pm Brace Commons 6 sessions: $80 For some, the kitchen is an intimidating realm that inspires some of the most challenging questions of our time: How do I hold a knife? Why does my baking oven say “broil”? What the heck is roux? Al dente? In this course I will give you the culinary confidence you need to tackle every recipe you will find online or from Grandma’s Rolodex—whether Grandma’s American, Chinese, or French. From the grocery store to a piping-hot meal on the table, we will cover every step of the cooking process. We will go over an essential kitchen repertoire of pasta, soups and stews, casseroles, stir-fries, desserts and more. You will also build cooking instincts that will ensure the freshest, most flavorful, and not mentioning safe to eat dishes. By the end of the course, I guarantee you will be able to open up any stocked fridge and crank out a magnificent meal. Wine Discovery Instructor: Wes Schuab Wednesday 7-9pm 6 sessions: $90 per person We will learn the basics of wine appreciation using the nine essences of wine tasting. Participants will be exposed to a broad spectrum of wine through variety, type and location. Participants will learn tips on how to order and buy as well as standard wine etiquette and pairing. Each participant is asked to prepare a question to present to the class. Must be 21 or older to enroll. ID required to register. First Class Is MANDATORY. 23 student maximum for class. HEALTH AND WELLNESS Contemporary Dance Instructor: Saida Makhmudzade Mondays 5-6:30pm Wednesdays 5-6:30pm Sarner West Have you seen So You Think You Can Dance? Want to improve your flexibility and coordination? Try out contemporary dance! This class will consist of warm up, stretching, some basic ballet/modern technique work, ab and arm conditioning and new choreography every week. Great class for beginners and dancers alike and a great way to mix up doing the same old routine at the gym every day. Introduction to Belly Dancing Instructor: Sarah Zmarrou Wednesdays 3-4pm Sarner West 6 sessions: $40 per person This course is designed for students who are new to belly dance, as no prior experience is necessary. Students will learn introductory belly dance techniques and become familiarized with Arabic rhythms and music. Through combos, choreography and improvisational techniques, students will learn the beginnings of Baladi and modern styles. By the end of this course students will have a basic understanding of posturing, rhythm and form. Vinyasa Yoga Instructor: Tara Paniogue Tuesdays (beginning 1/22) 5-6pm Sarner West 6 sessions: $40 per person Beginner-to-intermediate yoga class. A fun and relaxing workout that helps with balance, strength and flexibility.
