Andrea Whittaker’s Responses to Questions Forwarded to Her from the Breakout Sessions PAC-TE Spring Conference April 16, 2013 Q: A: I would like to see the actual rubrics that edTPA has proposed. Campuses that wish to access a sample handbook can do so either as “exploratory” users of edTPA or as introductory members of the edTPA consortium. Email tpa-support@aacte.org Q: A: How does edTPA relate to state certification exams? Are there plans to correlate assessments? edTPA can be used as a summative assessment of readiness to teach and is a measure of content pedagogy. It can replace paper and pencil assessments of content pedagogy (i.e., Praxis 2), but not subject matter or basic skills exams. Q: A: What is the cost of taking the edTPA assessment? $300 is the fee for candidates. There is no cost to campuses to participate in the edTPA Consortium Q: What is the pass rate first time for edTPA? A: Until the national standard setting is finalized in June 2013 and candidates take edTPA consequentially in Spring 2014, the pass rate cannot be determined. Q: A: Will $300 be charged each time candidates submit for grading (re-do)? The retake/resubmission charge is not yet determined and will depend on national standard setting and decisions about full or partial retakes. Q: What is the timetable for evaluation of student teachers? Where should they conduct a “re-do” if they have already left their student teaching placement (&/or graduated)? They’d need a setting where they would know the students & have permission to video . . . When operational, there will be multiple options for the timing of edTPA submissions suited to academic calendars (quarters/semesters). Score reporting is expected in a 2-3 week turnaround. Campuses will want to maximize candidates’ opportunities to learn and time with their students before submitting edTPA for scoring. One sample timeline for a semester program ending in mid June: Clinical placement begins in late January, edTPA due on April 15, scores by May 5, remediation and resubmission by June 5 (or sooner). This schedule allows candidates to remediate and resubmit while in the same semester placement. While campuses will want to set a due date that allows for retakes, it is best to maximize the time in classrooms before submission rather than providing time for the smaller number of candidates who may need to remediate. A: Q: A: How are new teachers from non edTPA merging into edTPA states being accepted, supported, etc.? Varies by state and policy. Some states will require out of state candidates to complete edTPA before they can be licensed in the edTPA state. This may include provisional license and completion of edTPA while teacher of record. Some states may provide support or mentoring to edTPA candidates under these conditions.
