University Learning and Teaching Committee Teaching Development Grants Final Report Grant Holder Details Name Dr Jenny Clarke Position Senior Lecturer Department School of Sport and Physical Education Name of other participating staff Date of Application 3 April 2014 Category of Grant (please tick) One √ Funds Awarded $4,000 Funds Spent $3996 (max $5,000) Two (max $10,000) Project Details Title of Project Creating video resource to provide step-by-step instruction to scaffold biomechanics learning Give a brief description of the project (no more than 100 words) This will be published on the UC website. The iPad application “Doceri” is a recordable interactive whiteboard, while Camtasia software enables quick creation of high quality videos. This project involves using Doceri to provide step-by-step video tutorials to assist students in the Introduction to Biomechanics course to learn to analyse and solve biomechanical problems, and will use Camtasia to create videos providing distance students with enhanced in-context experiences. This is a challenging course for most of the PE and Sport Coaching cohort who make up over 90% of the course; the project will create course-specific resources similar to those available at Khan Academy to provide self-paced learning experience. Please comment on the following (indicate N/A where not applicable): 1. The positive impact the outcomes of this project have had on your teaching and/or the teaching in your department/school/ area. This project has led to the development of resources which will provide asynchronous help to students in the PE and Sport Coaching biomechanics courses with step-by-step instructions. This provides huge support for struggling students and provides self-paced learning aka Khan Academy. 2. The positive impact the outcomes of this project have had on student engagement and student learning at the University. This will have a very positive effect on student engagement (though providing support at the time it is needed) and learning (through step-by-step help) for the Introduction to Biomechanics courses in semester 1 2015. 3. How you have shared the findings of this initiative within the wider university community/nationally/ internationally. I will give a presentation about this work and its impact and student feedback at the 2015 Teaching Week. 4. If you plan to sustain/extend this initiative within the department/school beyond the finding period and if so, why or why not? I would like to extend this initiative, however it requires significant manpower which requires funding which is not presently available to me. 5. Outline any difficulties or problems you encountered during the course of the project/while attending the conference covered by the grant. I had to pay $125 from my programme coordinator funds to access the videos made by my student as he opted to use an iPad app which it turns out charges money to share videos in a useful format! 6. Comment on any differences in outcome of the project/conference from those you predicted or expected when you applied for the grant. Really pleased with the outcomes, pretty much what I expected to get from the project. Really good experience in creating tutoring tools for the student involved, and he has provided tutorials for all my coursework. We have cut back Biomech teaching hours from 48 to 36 for 2015 and I feel this has huge potential to fill some of that gap, and will particularly provide support for distance students who don’t have “study mates” to work with and who seem less likely so far to ask for one-to-one help. 7. Any further comments. Fantastic student was involved who got a good experience using technology to provide resources for teaching. Bit disappointed to get zero funding for software (I applied for $5K, but was only given the $4K teaching assistant part) as we could have used a better product to make the videos. It is very challenging to have a project funded but no capital items at all – would suggest in future having a (small/capped) budget for capital expenditure/software. (Advice to future grant applicants is welcome here, as are any suggestions for the better handling of the application process or administration of grants.)
