CAPSTONE Overview The senior CAPSTONE project is a graduation requirement for all seniors in Connecticut. The main idea behind the CAPSTONE project is to demonstrate and utilize all of the knowledge and skills you have acquired throughout your years of schooling. You will be using your abilities in reading, writing, critical thinking, problem-solving, public speaking, as well as time management and organizational skills. You will also need to approach an adult to be your mentor throughout the project. The Journal Throughout the duration of the CAPSTONE Project you will keep a journal documenting everything you do that pertains to the project. Along with each entry, you will write a reflection of your thoughts, feelings and questions about the project. The following are some examples. If you go to a meeting in the cafeteria about CAPSTONE, you will write it down with the date in your journal. If your senior advisory teacher discusses CAPSTONE in Advisory, write it down with the date in your journal. Each time you meet with your mentor, document the meeting in your journal. Whenever you do research for your project or spend time working on the project, document your accomplishments in the journal. Don’t forget to write the reflection piece. Initial Requirements You will develop a proposal for a CAPSTONE project that demonstrates your achievement of our magnet theme standards in the areas of academic, social and civic expectations. Your proposal will include an overview of your project idea and must be signed by your mentor. (form attached) You will need to have your parent/guardian complete and sign the Parent/Guardian Consent/Liability Release Form. (form attached) These three documents must be turned in to your Senior Advisory teacher by the due date specified. The Project Planning Organize the project into specific steps Set deadlines for each step Review the steps with your mentor Implementation Do the necessary research and take notes (be sure to cite sources) If applicable, obtain the skills needed to implement your project (tutorials, manuals, practice). Add journal entries for all of your progress toward completion of the project. Putting it together The final project should be in the form of a presentation, i.e., power point, prezi, iMovie, or other slide show. You will include evidence of the progress you have made in the areas of our magnet theme standards- academic, social and civic responsibility. This evidence can be in the form of tangible artifacts or can be described within your project presentation. Reflection You will complete a reflection form prior to your presentation. The aim of this form is to elicit your thoughts and feelings about the progress you have made throughout high school toward achieving our schools’ magnet theme standards. You will also reflect on your personal growth during the process of performing and presenting your CAPSTONE project. (form attached) Final Requirements You will do your final presentation in your senior advisory on the specified date. Your journal should be handed in to your advisory teacher at the time of your presentation. The final reflection form should be completed and handed in to your advisory teacher no later than the day after your presentation.
