Teacher Education Division – Membership Services Request for Funds Early Career Faculty Special Interest Group Proposed Project The Early Career Faculty SIG has been in existence since 2011. During the two years that it has been a SIG, social media outlets (i.e., Facebook group and GroupSpaces) have been utilized for distributing information regarding issues relevant to our members. We meet at each of the TED and CEC national meetings to support each other and discuss mutual efforts and interests. While these activities have been successful, we know there are additional early career faculty members (and supporters of those in this professional age bracket) that attend the TED and CEC meetings that are not currently aware of our group or the services it provides. We would like to increase the amount of support the SIG offers to its members. As a means to increase member engagement, increase membership within the SIG and to further promote our committee charge and goals, we request funding to support monthly updates to each page and five webinars with more experienced faculty members that can field questions specific to this SIG and help mentor members through the early career stage. Link to committee charge The Early Career Faculty SIG is a group for individuals interested in the development of pre-tenure faculty members. The primary goal is to discuss topics relevant to early stages of a career in higher education to ensure success by sharing ideas and experiences and providing support for career advancement. Topics of interest are cogenerated and discussions are rich and aimed to provide focused support for early career work. The proposed project aligns with our committee charge by supporting early career faculty through five webinars in which more experienced faculty members can field questions related to topics of interest (e.g., obtaining grant funding; balancing multiple roles; applying for tenure) and guide early career faculty members in a low-risk forum. Link to strategic plan This project will “Foster and develop teaching, research, and evaluations skills of members” by providing mentoring from more experienced faculty on these specific topics. Monthly updates to each page (Facebook and Group spaces) will also foster skill building for each area through providing additional resources. “Increasing member engagement” will be easily attained through this project in that they will have more direct contact with the SIG through monthly updates to pages (Facebook and Group spaces) and opportunities to engage with the group more than two times per year. This project seeks to “Increase diversity and representation in the membership” through increased visibility among TED and SIG members. We believe that as we increase our service to members, more individuals will be interested in joining the group. Monthly updates to pages (Facebook and GroupSpaces) will “Improve the dissemination of information regarding research and other issues” as resources related to these topics will be posted for members. Why Support this Project? The Early Career Faculty SIG represents a critical membership group within TED. As graduate students move into the field and become faculty members, they need support in order to be successful. While their own institutions may provide a form of support, our hope is that the Early Career Faculty SIG can provide these faculty members with a professional “home” for which they will take ownership and continue to support for years to come. We feel that this project will increase the visibility of the SIG, help to support SIG members and increase the chances of TED becoming that professional “home”.
