PRACTICUM

INFORMATION SHEET

General Information, Policies, and Procedures:

1.

All core and specialty coursework must be completed prior to enrolling in practicum. Students are allowed to take a maximum of 9 hours during the semester in which they are enrolled in Practicum.

2.

The Practicum Coordinator will contact you at an appropriate time (Once you have made application for practicum) to discuss your potential placement. Please do not call the Practicum Coordinator; he/she will be in touch with you. We try to match your interest areas with an available site.

3.

We have working agreements with several schools and agencies. You will be placed at one of the sites.

4.

Please do not contact any site unless you have been told to do so by the Practicum

Coordinator. The agencies have requested that students not contact them directly.

5.

Generally there are no night or weekend placements.

6.

School counseling placements: Placements will be made within the School

Systems.

7.

Rehabilitation counseling placements: The Coordinator for Rehabilitation does all the placements within the state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Your application forms will be given to him/her/ and he/she will contact you directly.

8.

The placement process:

Practicum application filed by appropriate deadlines

Coordinator contacts you to discuss placement

Coordinator makes the contact with proposed site to discuss your qualifications and to see if the site supervisor will interview you

Your are contacted to set up appointment for interview at the site

The site supervisor notifies the Practicum Coordinator if it is a good match and if the student is accepted

If the student chooses not to accept an appropriate placement, then he/she will have to take whatever site(s) are available once all other students have been placed which could result in not having a placement site for that semester.

9.

You will not begin on-site until after the first class meeting. At that time you will receive your paperwork (contracts and agreements).

1

10.

Please provide an updated resume with your application. Site supervisors will want to know what other kind of work experience and/or training you might have had.

11.

Practicum experiences are graded on the basis that you must have a grade equivalent of “B” or better. If you fail practicum, you will be allowed to repeat the course only once with an approved Plan of Improvement. The Plan of

Improvement will be developed by your University Site Supervisor and must be signed by the student.

12.

Practicum: You will be required to have a minimum of 100 hours-of these 100 hours; 40 hours must be in direct client contact. It has been our experience that it takes much more than 100 hours to get the number of direct hours so you need to plan accordingly. The 100 hours are to be dispersed over the entire semester which simply means those students registered for the Fall and Spring will complete a total of 8 to 10 hours a week. Thus, those students registered for the

Summer will complete a total of 13 to 16 hours per week.

NOTE: Thanks for your cooperation in advance. We look forward to you having a wonderful and exciting experience during your practicum.

Important Information

Your experience in Practicum is a very important part of your degree program. It is anticipated that you will have the opportunity to utilize the skills you have developed in your degree program at your placement site. Assignments are made with agencies, schools, or institutions of higher education. Selecting the most appropriate field site is vital if you are to benefit most. Therefore, it is very important that you begin to plan for your practicum early in your degree program.

Applicants for practicum are asked to carefully read and follow the guidelines stipulated with this packet. Failure to do so may result in the student being denied the opportunity to enroll in practicum for the particular semester requested.

All students enrolled in the masters degree program must complete a 100-clock hour Practicum which must be completed in one (1) semester.
