Course: Resource/Study Skills “Striving for Success” 2014-2015 Teacher: Christina Brown Email: CBrown@montgomerycatholic.org Course Description: The aim of this Resource/Study Skills class is to assist students in meeting academic accommodations as outlined by the Archdiocese of Mobile. The goal of this course is to help students learn to self-accommodate for deficits and to be able to adapt in the regular classroom in all subject areas. Students will earn an elective unit of credit for this course. Goals of this program: Identify students who experience academic problems Assist students identified with a learning disability Administer a multisensory educational curriculum that will provide the opportunity to experience success Present core course teachers with accommodations based on the individual needs of the student Maintain constant communication with teachers and parents to ensure student progress Provide additional instruction and practice for individuals or small groups to help gain mastery of topics learned Increase student knowledge and skills to a level of independent success in the classroom Build self-esteem Policies and Procedures: Our program strives to use small group or individual instruction with grade level curriculum, provide study aides, evaluate academic strengths/weaknesses and provide academic accommodations that align with those recommended by the student’s psychological-educational evaluation. All students must have a current psychological-educational assessment on file. Student achievements, as well as accommodations, are strictly individualized; therefore, attention, assistance and accommodations will vary per individual. However, there are some commonalities in the procedures of this course: Be on time to class every day Be seated, quiet and respectful to others during class Bring academic planner/agenda to class daily If needed/part of the student’s academic accommodation plan and a student has a core course test, he/she will complete half of the test during the appointed course period, then will complete the other half in one sitting during Resource No more than time and a half will be provided for a test All tests must be taken the same day and no later than the next school day after the test was assigned -If a test is not completed in due time, the test will be given back to the teacher and will be graded as is The students are expected to abide by the MCPS Veritas. Any work submitted by a student will be only the student’s work. When provided with extra time on a test, the Veritas still applies and a student may NOT utilize additional time as an opportunity to study more “Spot checks” will be implemented throughout the quarter/semester. A portion of this course will help equip you with effective organizational skills. It is my job to make sure you are incorporating those skills in your daily academic life. I will ask to check your locker, planner and/or backpack at random times during the week with your knowledge.
