M.SC.TECH DISSERTATION
"INTERMEDIATE DEPTH RECENT BENTHIC FORAMINFERA FROM ANDAMAN SEA AT
SITEANDWN 2002/1– AND-324 "
Brief Summary –
The study on benthic foraminifera was pursued on the samples obtained from the location
ANDWN 2002/1, AND-324. A total number of 212 benthic species have been identified. The ecological
preferences and distribution of benthic foraminifera were studied on the basis of the ecological
factors, like degraded or labile organic carbon influx, oxygen concentration in sediment-water
interface as well as pore water, salinity, temperature etc.
On the basis of faunal data, total no. of species, individuals, benthic and planktic ratio, , the
studied interval (AND-324; 0-9.25 cm) is subdivided into five periods depending upon the
paleoenvironmental changes.
 In the depth interval of ~ 0 to 1.6 cm, well oxygenated environment is represented, with low
productivity of the species. This interval is dominated by the presence of Cibicides species and
G.nitidula as well as low abundance of High organic carbon group; 

 This is followed by the presence of High productivity in the interval of ~1.6 to 4.2 cm. The
high productivity environment is represented by the presence of Triloculina Species, S.lepidula and
U.probiscidea. S.lepidula is a good indicator of deep low oxygen and high organic carbon content
whereas U.probiscidea are characteristic of low oxygenated and high organic carbon rich sediments; 

 In the interval in-between ~4.2 to ~4.8 cm indicates again, well oxygenated environment
with very low productivity (mainly, the decline in productivity of Cibicides sp.); 
 However, the Total Bolivina group shows a high values in this region ~ 4.8 to 8.3 cm which is
indicative of a reducing environment environment. The pore patterns and rounded periphery of the
test of Cibicides bradyi indicates adaptation to lower oxygen levels (Rathburn and Corliss, 1994). The
labile organic carbon group shows a decline in this region. This also shows a little high abundance of
high organic carbon group. This may indicate high input of terrestrial carbon in this period; and 

 Finally, the sequence then follows highly reducing environment (~8.3-9.25 cm) less
abundance of Bolivinids ie. Total Bolivina. 
Also, a no. of locally disappeared elongated fossils viz., Siphonodosaria Lepidula,
Mucronina Sp., Pleurostomella Sp. etc. were found while analysing the samples under microscope.

LETTER OF MOTIVATION
Myself Pranav Muktibodh an M. Sc. Tech in Applied Geology from Indian School of Mines
(ISM), Dhanbad. I obtained my Bachelor of Science (Hons.) degree in Geology from Vinoba Bhave
University, Hazaribag. Since my childhood, I have possessed a keen interest in Geology. I am in awe
of the pre-cambrian metamorphites exposed all over Dhanbad city which is a plateau area. When I
was young, I was mystified and enthralled by the sheer size of the hills in the surroundings and ups
and downs of the highway. I was inspired and encouraged by my father, who is a geologist. He
always motivated me to join a cause for study and preservation of ecosystems and forests. During
my college years I studied geology, building up a foundation of knowledge. On top of this, my
personal study has given me a deeper understanding, and engaged me with a desire to learn more.
I Possess requisite qualification i.e., M. Sc. Tech Graduate in Applied Geology from Indian
School of Mines, Dhanbad where I Studied thirty different subjects of Applied Geology. Most of
them are quite useful and relevant to the Position of Geologist in a metal mining industry, such as
Geological Exploration, Geophysical Exploration-theoretical as well as practical approach to various
Geophysical Techniques of Mineral, Hydrocarbon, Groundwater exploration using Seismic, Gravity,
Resistivity, Electromagnetic methods and Borehole logging techniques, Ore Geology, Environmental
Geology. Theoretical as well as practical knowledge of Geostatistics to be applied in spatial
modelling of an ore deposit and hence compute the ore reserve, tonnage, assay value etc. and
determine the cut-off grade for the mine (QA/QC analysis). I possess theoretical as well as practical
knowledge of Rock Mechanics which includes Engineering Properties of Rocks, Influence of
Geological factors, Normal and Shear stress components, failure criterions and theorems related to
RQD, Slope stability analysis by core logging. I am well acquainted with remote sensing and image
interpretation, Engineering Geology, Seismology, Geochemistry and Isotope geology.
I have complete knowledge of Operating Systems, Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7,
Microsoft office applications for the versions 2003, 2007 and 2010. I also possess computer
knowledge in Strater which I used to prepare lithologs , Grapher 8.0 and Surfer 8.0 (Golden
software) for digitizing maps and preparing contoured maps , Rockworks for borehole logging ,
Rockpack III and GeOrient for preparing stereographic projections used in structural analysis ,
Photoshop (all versions), AutoCAD (basics), CorelDraw XIV, Kaleidagraph etc. out of my own interest.
With the above motivation I feel I would be benefitted personally with the knowledge and
experience that I would gain through this opportunity, I realise.
