CITY OF SEATTLE Innovation Team, Design Expert SALARY: LOCATION: JOB TYPE: SHIFT: DEPARTMENT: BARGAINING UNIT: CLOSING DATE $37.87 - $56.82 Hourly City Hall, 600 4th Ave., Seattle, Washington Civil Service Exempt, Regular, Full-time Day Office of the Mayor Not represented 06/02/15 12:00 AM Pacific Time POSITION DESCRIPTION: The City of Seattle was one of 14 cities selected to participate in the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Innovation Delivery Teams (i-team) program. Innovation teams function as in house innovation consultants, moving from one mayoral priority to the next. Reporting to the Innovation Team Director, the Design Expert will join the Mayor's Office of Policy & Innovation and work with other Mayor’s Office, City staff, and community stakeholders to conduct in-depth, complex, and clear research into the various projects taken on by the i-team. Using a variety of innovative human-centered solutions, the design expert will deliver and incorporate diverse perspectives of cross-cultural, knowledge, and skills understanding to better understand, relate, and respond to the needs of internal and external stakeholders. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: • Bring Human-Centered design research insights into interaction design concepts through sketching, prototyping, and front-end development; • Ability to convey concepts through wireframes, flows, and mockups (all desirable); • Develop value propositions, look, feel, and rational for social services; • Embrace behavior change theory into practice; • Transform spaces to spark new thinking and doing; • Ability to work in fast-paced environment and deliver on multiple projects in compressed timeframe; • Coach cross-functional workshops throughout design process (understand, ideate, envision, plan, prototype/pilot, implement); • Create prototypes to test feasibility and allow a rapid evolution of ideas. And bring visual design tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator; • Work closely with i-team and Office of Policy and Innovation to identify opportunities for service design to make an impact at scale; • Train and educate stakeholders on service design methods; ? • Prepare clear compelling presentations and reports for external and public consumption; and • Undertake other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: We seek an energetic and engaged professional with the ability to lead design within a project, manage scope and deliverables, and bring exposure to interactions. Candidates should have the ability to prototype in multiple levels of interactivity, communicate the story of design solutions, and have experience synthesizing research into a story to help inspire solutions. We are interested in all/some of the following skills sets (research/strategy methods/visual communication, data analysis and visualization, UX/IX, etc.) but we are happy to consider candidates who have some but not all of these qualifications. Other qualifications include demonstrations of the following: • Experience working in public sector, non-profit, social enterprises, for profit entities, consulting, startup, or a related field; • Ability to understand the policy implications of data and to tell a compelling story; • The capacity to thrive in relationships with stakeholders in the civic sector; • A strong commitment to a collegial workplace and ability to learn new tools and do self-guided work within a fast-paced environment; Education: A Baccalaureate or Master’s degree in visual, interactive, or design – with strong emphasis in human factors. Experience: Three or more years of design experience in concept ideation, design strategy/research, rapid prototyping, outreach mobilization, facilitation, stakeholder mapping, and effective communication. Equivalency: Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position and salary level is pending classification as a Strategic Advisor 2, exempt. We expect to make an offer at the salary mid-point.
