APTI 350 Asbestos NESHAP Inspection and Safety Training Course Instructor Information This course instructor manual is the companion document to the APTI 350 Asbestos NESHAP Inspection and Safety student manual. Course materials have been revised and updated. Instructors who have presented the course in the past should take time to become familiar with differences in the current version before teaching it. Changes include the order of topics, format, content of subject presentations, material depth, and related slides. Some chapters require substantial class time to cover sufficiently the associated topics. As with any class, discussions about real world situations and detailed explanations of various slides and other course materials are encouraged, but time allocations to each session must be carefully managed to ensure that all course topics are covered in adequate detail within the overall allotted time for the course. The instructor manual has been completely revised from the previous version. Instructors are expected to have base-level knowledge of asbestos control practices and regulatory programs. If not, the instructor should read the student manual chapters to become familiar with the core content of each module of the course. This revised edition uses the actual PowerPoint presentations as its base. The manual provides the instructor with notes regarding important points to cover for each slide. Some slides have very detailed notes while others do not. The more detailed notes usually accompany slides that contain topic bullets without adequate explanation and will assist the instructor in understanding the core information for that specific slide. The use of instructor notes is optional for instructors who are very familiar with the topic. The revised APTI 350 course was designed with a prerequisite self-instructional module that course sponsors should request prospective students to complete prior to attending the course. Course registrants will be asked by the sponsor to bring a printed copy of the self-instructional module test to the course. The self-instructional module focuses heavily on basic and background information in the first three chapters of the student manual. The PowerPoint slides for Chapters 1-3 in are fair detail. However, the instructor may move quickly through these slides and may choose to use a smaller subset of the slides in the actual instructional presentations for these early three chapters. If the instructor does not personally review the prerequisite self-instructional module, the Chapters 1-3 PowerPoint slides are sufficient to cover the base-level background information that should be presented to the students. Students may be directed to the student manual for various detail beyond what is provided in the presentations. The course pre-test and post-test utilize the same test questions although the order of the questions varies between the two tests. This is an effort to help eliminate test memory while creating a way to measure improvement in student knowledge of the asbestos NESHAP topic between the beginning and end of the course. If U.S. EPA is wholly or partially funding the presentation of this training course, EPA may expect the instructor and/or the course sponsor to report on course outcomes, as this process accomplishes. Page 1 of 2 The following materials are suggested for use and will contribute towards successful presentation of a comprehensive course.
