International Medical Corps UK works alongside International Medical Corps Worldwide, responding to humanitarian emergencies and communities afflicted by conflict, poverty and natural disaster in more than 20 countries around the world. International Medical Corps UK is moving into an exciting time of expansion, looking to dramatically increase its unrestricted private fundraising, scale up the funds raised, expand partnerships and relationships across the new website and online channels as a key means to increase awareness of the organisation across the UK and Europe. To do this; International Medical Corps UK have embarked on an ambitious strategy to grow public awareness, high profile coverage and high value fundraising to hit ambitious targets for growth. The Resource Development & Communications Team leads the International Medical Corps UK engagement with private fundraising, media relationships and marketing campaigns across the UK and Europe as well as raising awareness, general outward facing communication and brand. The team is responsible for raising both income and public and media awareness of International Medical Corps UK’s work and brand. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE To manage International Medical Corps UK Media & PR Relations function and play an integral part of International Medical Corps UK Resource Development & Communications team. Specifically, this will involve: Establish International Medical Corps UK as the 'go-to' authority on issues relating to emergency response and other elements of our lifesaving work, helping us become the leading point of contact and spokesperson for the media Meet or exceed an agreed annual reach and brand goal for International Medical Corps UK, ensuring global brand guidelines are adhered Gather engaging content and write copy for a defined target audience to support marketing and fundraising. Build working relationships & partnerships, within the media including print, radio, TV and online in the UK and across Europe as well as, other potential partners and among both key leadership and International Medical Corps UK staff. KEY RESULTS AREAS (PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES) Media development, implementation & evaluation Plan, develop and implement a pro-active PR & media component to support the organisations objectives, as part of an overall Resource Development & Communications strategy Routinely identify media & PR relations opportunities and pproactively pitch potential stories to news media and publications to continuously ensure International Medical Corps UK is visible to the defined target audience. Planning & production Manage the media relations function delivering efficient working practices, including work flow planning, reporting and evaluation Manage the internal approval process for media releases, comments etc. with the Director of Resource Development & Communications Plan and deliver media and PR campaigns based on themes and issues of relevance to the organisation, globally and regionally. Play a proactive role in anticipating, preparing for and implementing responses to crisis situations, or other situations where there is risk of damage to our reputation or staff security or wellbeing Work with Operations and technical teams to determine media, PR and communications commitments included in proposals to institutional funders. Track and ensure timely and high quality delivery against those commitments. Work closely with field teams throughout the organisation to develop and implement media plans, providing media relations support Relationships & partnerships Raise awareness of International Medical Corps UK through promoting our work and aims by proving comprehensive media relations support for key stakeholders and to deliver first class media relations service to journalists and other media representatives through a sector leading press office function. Build and cultivate robust relationships with key international, national & regional journalists to help sell-in stories across all platforms, including the sector press Play a proactive role in seeking, securing and monitoring media partnerships to further raise awareness Seek out opportunities in the media for celebrity supporters, ambassadors and experts that highlight their involvement with the organisation Represent our work externally at a senior level, actively networking and working with external PR contacts to build and strengthen priority relationships Stories & brand Proactively identify International Medical Corps stories to demonstrate impact, including the stories of volunteers, beneficiaries and staff to demonstrate the impact of our life saving work Gather written, photographs, video and audio stories from the field Strengthen and deliver the process for gathering and utilizing stories, photos and videos from the field and ways to push out content to internal and external audiences. Deal sensitively with people who have been affected by crisis, in order to create a platform for them to tell their story in the media. Working with other Resource Development & Communications team members Actively participate and contribute to the development and implement of the fundraising, digital/marketing functions as part of the Resource Development & Communications unit senior management team. Jointly develop, implement and monitor Resource Development & Communication unit wide campaigns Assist the Director of Resource Development & Communications in planning and budgeting for the communications function Support to key leadership and International Medical Corps Staff Brief and advise senior staff and external spokespeople i.e. staff from the field undertaking media interviews Seek out opportunities for field staff visiting International Medical Corps UK to talk about the work through media interviews or events Alongside the Director guide, develop and coach key staff and leadership in public speaking and talking to the media Support Communications and Resource Development-US, as required. Other Tasks Perform such other responsibilities as may be required from time to time in order to ensure the smooth running of the team, the senior management team, cross departmental teams, the department and the organisation as a whole Provide the out of hours press office function (this will include the evenings on the days of work and alternate weekends). PERSON SPECIFRICATION 1. Must have at least relevant Bachelor’s Degree 2. Relevant management experience of media, PR, communications function 3. Extensive experience of selling-in stories to the national and regional media in a highly confident manner and building relationships with journalists 4. Experience and understanding in gathering content and the challenges within an NGO healthcare environment and international emergency response with the ability to be creative about the development of stories, comment and media activity 5. Solid experience & proven track record of delivering high profile media results 6. Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, including the presence to deal effectively with diverse constituencies including key leadership and staff in the field 7. Strong media contacts across UK and Europe 8. Ability to develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships 9. Highly motivated, results orientated self-starter with a focused professional approach as well as the drive and commitment to set and achieve challenging goals 10. Excellent writing skills, including the ability to inspire and persuade, communicate clearly and concisely, and formulate messages in an engaging way 11.
