JOB POSTING: Regional Food Policy Advocate – Southwest Kansas Kansas Appleseed, a nonprofit advocacy organization, is hiring a full-time food policy advocate in southwest Kansas to strengthen regional and statewide efforts to increase participation in the food assistance program. The advocate’s office will be in southwest Kansas, focusing outreach and assistance efforts in Finney, Ford and Seward Counties. Kansas Appleseed is a nonprofit, nonpartisan justice center dedicated to vulnerable and excluded Kansans. We investigate social, economic and political injustice in Kansas and advocate for system-wide solutions. We are expanding our work on childhood hunger in Kansas with the launch of the Children’s Hunger Reduction Project. In many parts of Kansas, significant numbers of eligible persons are not receiving food assistance benefits (previously known as food stamps, now known nationally as SNAP benefits). The USDA estimates only 72% of eligible Kansans are receiving the food assistance benefits for which they qualify. Responsibilities: Community organizing (connecting individuals, schools, nonprofits and faith-based organizations to create a network of supporters to increase food assistance access and participation) Policy advocacy (extensive collaboration with the project’s statewide coordinator and other project advocates to craft administrative and legislative policy advocacy agendas) Direct services (providing application assistance to persons eligible for food assistance benefits) Qualifications: Experience: Candidates should have experience in social justice advocacy, including coalition management, policy advocacy at the local and state level, media outreach and strategic communications, and/or research and writing. Education: Candidates should have an advanced degree related to social justice law and policy, such as a JD, MPP or MSW. Work experience may substitute for education requirement. Schedule: Candidates must be available for some evening and weekend commitments. Candidates will need a personal vehicle, valid driver’s license and insurance as the position requires frequent local travel. All travel expenses will be reimbursed.
