Course Outline: Module 5 Cardiovascular System AHS 115 Medical Terminology The primary goal of this module is: Identify the structures of the cardiovascular system; and describe cardiovascular system disorders and diseases, test, procedures and drug categories. Module 5 – Cardiovascular System Introduction Is anyone in your family affected by heart disease? High blood pressure? Millions of Americans suffer from the various types of cardiovascular disease. As we learn the terms and structures of the cardiovascular system, it is my hope that you are better able to understand information from doctor visits. The cardiovascular system is made up of the pump (heart) and vessels that distribute blood throughout your body. This system delivers the necessary substances to the cells of the body as well as removes waste. Learning Objectives After completing this module, students will be able to: 1. Identify and define the combining forms, prefixes and suffixes introduced in this module. 2. Correctly spell and pronounce medical terms and major anatomical structures relating to the cardiovascular system. 3. Identify and describe the major cardiovascular organs and their functions. 4. Describe the anatomy of the heart, and how blood flows through the heart. 5. Explain how the electrical conduction system controls the heartbeat. 6. List and describe the characteristics of the three types of blood vessels. 7. Define pulse and blood pressure. 8. Identify and define cardiovascular anatomical terms. 9. Identify and define selected cardiovascular pathology terms; diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; and medications. 10. Define selected abbreviations associated with the cardiovascular system.
