Fund Raising – Helpful Hints - Rotary 7680 Kilimanjaro Climb for Polio

advertisement
ROTARY 7680 KILIMANJARO FUND RAISING
We’re asking each climber to raise $3,000 for Rotary International's END POLIO NOW campaign between now and late
October 2014. It does require some work, but is made easier because donations are tax-deductible, it’s for a great cause,
and you can say “I’m climbing one of the highest mountains in the world. What else do I have to do for a donation?” :o) And,
100% goes to polio eradication efforts since you pay all your own expenses.
The 2012 and 2013 climbers raised money in a variety of ways, mostly from personal requests and emails. One sent out a
“save the wallet” email early on. You can learn a lot about what 2012 climbers did to prepare for the climb, some fund
raising approaches, and inspiring verbiage at http://rotary7680kiliclimb.org/index.php/2012-climbers.
1. THE STEP BY STEP PROCESS FOR CHECK DONATIONS
1. Checks should be made out to Rotary 7680 District Fund, Inc. This is our District’s 501(c)3 organization that will write a
check directly to The Rotary Foundation for Polio Plus. We need the completed Donation Receipt with the check.
2. Fill out a Donation Detail and Receipt sheet - for Check Donations sheet (attached) for each check. For Rotarian donors,
enter their Rotary International #, Club Name, Club # if known, #, and District #, to get Paul Harris Fellow credit. You may
give a duplicate to the donor as their receipt. You may also send them a Thank You for Your Donation letter.
3. Mail both to Kandi Ranson, Treasurer, The District 7680 Fund, Inc., P.O. Box 527, Huntersville, NC 28070.
4. If the donation is for $250 or more to qualify them as a Sponsor, please also send a copy of the Donation Detail sheet to
Mike Walker at Stephens, 4521 Sharon Rd., Ste. 200, Charlotte, NC 28211. They will be contacted for logos, how they want
their name shown, etc. You should also send them a Thank You for Your Donation letter for donations of $250 or more.
5. For each batch of checks sent to Kandi Ranson, please attach a Cover Letter for Donations to District Fund Treasurer,
and fax a copy to Mike Walker at 704-442-5055 or scan and email to mwalker@stephens.com. You should make a copy of
everything you mail.
QUESTIONS? Ask Mike Walker at c5000nc@gmail.com, mwalker@stephens.com, or 704-589-2754.
2. THE STEP BY STEP PROCESS FOR ONLINE DONATIONS
1. Each climber will have their own web page at http://rotary7680kiliclimb.org/2014/: Click on 2012 Climbers on the left
side bar for ideas from our 2012 climbers on why we climbed, fund raising appeals, pictures of our practice climbs, etc.
2. Donors should click on the Donate button and follow the prompts. They will probably have to enter the donation amount
on two successive pages. They should print out the final payment page. Rotarians should enter their Rotary International #,
Club Name, Club # if known, and District #, to receive Paul Harris Fellow credit.
3. As with check donations, you may give them a Thank You for Your Donation letter if they request.
QUESTIONS? Ask Marc Friedland, our Webmaster, at marc@marcfriedland.us or 704-651-1135.
3. THE STEP BY STEP PROCESS FOR SENDING AN INVOICE
1. You may modify and complete the Invoice sheet and provide it to the donor.
2. The donor should mail their check with a copy of the Invoice to Kandi Ranson, Treasurer, The District 7680 Fund, Inc.,
P.O. Box 527, Huntersville, NC 28070. Ask them to notify you when they mail the check and Invoice in.
3. If the donation is for $250 or more to qualify them as a Sponsor, please also send a copy of the Invoice to Mike Walker at
Stephens, 4521 Sharon Rd., Ste. 200, Charlotte, NC 28211. They will be contacted for logos, how they want their name
shown, etc. You should also send them a Thank You for Your Donation letter for donations of $250 or more.
QUESTIONS? Ask Mike Walker at c5000nc@gmail.com, mwalker@stephens.com, or 704-589-2754.
4. SPONSORSHIP RECOGNITION ON WEB SITE, BANNER & T-SHIRTS:
Clubs, individuals and organizations can all be Sponsors of the climb.
GILMANS - For $250 to $500, Sponsors can have their names on the banner with climbers at the base of Kilimanjaro, and
hopefully at the top of Kilimanjaro, and will be displayed at climb-related events.
STELLA - For $500 to $1,000, GILMANS recognition, plus Sponsors can have names or logos listed prominently on the
Home page of the official climb web site through December 2014 and on T-shirts to be worn by climbers and others.
UHURU - Premier Sponsors at $1,000 and above. GILMANS & STELLA recognition, plus prominent, larger, lead position
placement on the web site through December 2014 and T-shirt and materials published about the climb.
5. TWO EXAMPLES OF EMAIL FUND RAISING APPEALS:
Here are two examples of 2012 fund raising request emails, one from Mike and Susan Walker (Charlotte South Rotary) and
one from John Tabor (Charlotte Rotary). Both were successful, especially with follow up conversations.
1. FROM MIKE AND SUSAN WALKER (their final email appeal before the climb)
Hi Mike,
This is it. We leave tomorrow (Thursday) as two of 30 North Carolina climbers to scale Mt. Kilimanjaro from September 10 th15th to raise money for Rotary International’s END POLIO NOW campaign.
Read more below the pictures, & at our web site at http://www.rotary7680kiliclimb.org/index.php/climbers/25-mikewalker or tinyurl.com/cvv7u6k. We have some cool photos and diagrams there as well. And a Donate button. :o)
If you’d like to help:
- You can click on our Donate button on the web site. Your donation is fully tax-deductible. And, because we’re paying ALL
of our trip expenses, 100% goes to Rotary International for polio eradication.
- If you would like to pay with a check, you can make it out to ‘Rotary District 7680 Fund’. It will all go to Rotary International
for polio eradication. You can mail to us at Mike and Susan Walker, 5000 Winding Brook Rd., Charlotte, NC 28226. Our
son-in-law is handling checks while we’re gone, and will keep us up-to-date on donations.
Photos to be posted on Flickr and Facebook
- We will post photos and updates from Kilimanjaro (and our Serengeti safari) on Flickr and Facebook. Our Flickr link
is http://www.flickr.com/photos/9422625@N02/sets/72157631405970970/. Not much there yet, because we’re not there yet.
:o)
- If we are not already Facebook friends, feel free to ‘Friend’ us to stay up to date with the climb.
Our Preparation and the Climb:
- We’ve been climbing mountains as diverse as North Carolina’s Grandfather Mountain and the Canadian Rockies in the
Banff National Forest in Alberta. We’ve also been working out 5 to 6 days a week to prepare for the 6 day climb. We are
ready!
- Our climb leader is the very experienced Macon Dunnagan, who’s in Mike’s Charlotte-South Rotary Club and has climbed
‘Kili’ 21 times. We will do everything Macon tells us. Especially ‘poley poley’ – slowly, slowly.
Rotary International and Polio:
- Rotary International began immunizing children worldwide against polio in 1985 and polio cases have plummeted by more
than 99% since then. But, the final 1% is the most difficult for this VERY contagious disease. We have both known people
with polio in our adult lives.

Feel free to text us while we are in Tanzania. (Mike at 704-589-2754 and Susan at 704-578-1519). And be sure to check out
our web sites and ‘friend’ us on Facebook. Thank you so much for supporting our efforts!!!

ROTARY AND POLIO
Most people in the US are not familiar with Polio and don’t even know it exists anymore – It does, just not here.
Rotary has been fighting Polio since 1985, actually their first foundation grant was to the International Society of Crippled
Children, which later became Easter Seals. Between 1985 and 2000, Rotary immunized more than 500 million
children. The World Health Organization estimates that Rotary has helped prevent more than 8,000,000 people from dying
from Polio. We have made great progress and we are almost there
In 1988, there were 125 Polio-Endemic countries and 300,000 cases a year
In 1994, the Americas were certified Polio-Free
In 2002, Europe was certified Polio-Free
In 2006 there were only 4 Polio-Endemic countries in the world.
This year India was certified Polio-Free, leaving only three other countries
Bill and Melinda Gates issued a challenge grant a few years ago – if Rotary will raise $200M, they would give $300M.
We met the goal early and they gave an additional $50M
THANK YOU!
