NET FOLIO
GROUP DISCUSSION
Mr Cavanagh will interview and record this discussion
Go into the interview with notes drafted so you can refer to them during
the interview.
Practice it at home - get your parents/care givers to ask you the
questions. It is important that you are clear and concise with your
answers.
Group Discussion
In groups of three, discuss your learning at a round-table discussion
using your folios to assist in addressing the following:
What information did you find useful or interesting?
 Both were net sports and had numerous rules to learn
 Tactics used in badminton to win points (eg serve shuttle high and
deep to their backhand as it results it is your opponents weakest
shot)
 Tactics in badminton – may your opponent run to all positions of
the court to tire them
 Communication when playing volleyball is vital to avoid confusion
between team mates. If you don’t call for the ball EVERY POINT the
ball can often hit the ground and you lose the point
 Encourage team mates when they make a mistake in their digging,
setting spiking etc, DO NOT yell at them as it only makes them more
anxious and causes them to make more errors. When you create a
positive team environment on the court people usually perform
better.
2) Give examples of when you understood a concept more clearly and what
helped this understanding.
 VISUAL DEMONSTRATIONS - When you got shown by the (teacher/by me
peer/ from a youtube clip/ books) how to perform a _________
(smash, overhead serve.)
 Video analysis – shown what I needed to improve on. (when I needed
to improve my communication, decision making (when to block, when
to come to the net at volleyball and cover the block, when to yell
out mine)
3) What new skills you have learnt and how you acquired them.
 Learn to perform short serve, did you learn the importance of
serving to their weakest side (usually to their backhand as their
backhand overhead clear lacks power and it enables me to have the
opportunity to smash the shuttle and win the point quick and
easily.
 Learnt to communicate more effectively with team mates
 Learnt basic coaching techniques and how to coach Yr 8 & 9 students
 Learnt listening skills to listen to other team mates opinions and
ideas
4) Identify and explain the most significant area of your learning.
 Communication skills in volleyball. I had to communicate with other
team members to call out for the ball. I often found I wasn’t able
to react quick enough and call out “mine” so the ball would drop to
the ground and we would lose the point. This would then cause
tension as people started yelling and fighting at each other for
missing the ball
 Digging and/ or setting technique (You weren’t able make contact
with your arms properly, it took you a while to learn how to make
contact with the ball so that it went high into the air and to the
setter
5) How will this learning aid you in the future?
 Confidence when working in groups with others
 Increased knowledge of net sports (in particular rules in
badminton)
 Can also apply skills learnt to other sports
What have you learnt about working with others in a team.
 Some team members can be unreliable and / or lazy and this really
lets the team down as it creates more work for others
 Not everyone agrees on same thing, arguments can occur
 Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and it’s important to
work together and help each other out when needed
 It is important to communicate effectively with team mates, not
just yell at them. Use your words to explain how you are feeling
etc
How did you improve your communication skills?
 Through group discussion when planning the volleyball coaching
session
 When coaching the middle school students I really improved my
confidence when having to speak to a group of students and teach
them a specific skill
 Through playing doubles games in badminton I found we really had to
communicate effectively with my partner otherwise we got confused
as to who was going to go for the shuttle
Provide details of how well this program suited your preferred ways
of learning.
 It was really good at it had lots of visual learning opportunities
for me to learn. For example watching visual demonstrations from my
teacher or peers on how to perform badminton and volleyball
techniques. It was also really helpful watching the video footage
of me performing various techniques in volleyball as I was able to
analyze my performance after the game and see what needed to be
improved. I then focused on this next lesson
 It provided me with various ways to learn as a verbal learner. My
teacher provided me with lots of verbal cues when I was learning to
perform new techniques in badminton. For example, use your opposite
hand to point at the shuttle to track it in the air. My peers also
provided me with verbal cues and verbal feedback after I had made a
mistake with my technique.
 I found it best when my partner provided me with a verbal cue on
how to improve a specific technique in volleyball eg make sure you
bend your knees when digging the ball and then they followed it up
with a visual demonstration on how I should bend my knees.
What problems or issues did you encounter and how did you deal with
them?
 Not everyone wanted to use the same coaching style/philosophy when
we were coaching volleyball to the middle years students. We
overcame this by having a discussion and listening to everyone
opinions and not shutting them down so everyone felt included in
the group
 Not everyone was as confident in their coaching so to tended to not
contribute as much during the coaching activities. We dealt with
this by getting them to do the short introduction or by
demonstrating the skill to the group instead of having to verbally
explain the skill to the group.
Your discussion is assessed by your teacher, using a checklist to record
details; you then complete a self-assessment questionnaire about the
discussion.
