Spartan got off to a brilliant start last year with many opportunities in house events for everyone to participate and get involved with. The whole house pulled together to secure 11 wins throughout the year. Our biggest triumphs were winning two of the football tournaments and the new-look house quiz. The year began with wins in the junior boys’ football and senior boys’ 5-a-side football. In the junior football thanks goes to Will Paddington and Chris Brooks for great defence, and some great goals scored by Matt Lainson and Jasper Walford. Toby McLellan captained the senior 5-a-side team to victory; winning both of their matches, conceding only 1 goal in the process. Next came the Number Day quiz. Spartan came in a close second, with good entries from Rachael Locke and Chris Leong. Congratulations to Roman though, who won thanks to Team Cates-Beier. Spartan stormed ahead when it came to the general knowledge quiz at quiz day giving Roman and Trojan a run for their money; this won the house 6 points. It was great to see lots of participation in last year’s quiz day due to the revamping, meaning 40 students from each house were involved. Christmas lunch was once again enjoyed in houses this year, with everyone getting into the festive spirit, pulling crackers and sporting their party hats. The boys house hockey was another successful event for the house, we achieved second in junior and first in seniors! Well done to Josh Gilbank scoring for the Juniors and Max McHugh, Lewis Bull, James Green and Jack Handford for all scoring to secure our winning places. Cross country wasn't our strongest event but we all pulled together and everyone ran their hardest. In the juniors Jasper and Matt secured 1st and 2nd for the year 7 boys, Lauren Gregory achieved 2nd for year 8, Emma Trotman got 1st for year 11, and Jack Handford placed 3rd also for year 11. In senior house rugby Max McHugh, Lewis Bull, Harry Carter and James Atkinson all scored some great tries securing Spartan with a thriving win. Spartan gained yet another win in the senior music competition, with thanks to flautists Imogen Phillips and Emily Curtis who achieved 2nd and 3rd for us. Ciara O’Driscoll won the competition for Roman but it wasn’t enough to stop a Spartan victory. Further congratulations go to Patrick Dineen for a 2nd place in the junior competition for a piece on the saxophone. The verse speaking competition went amazingly well for Spartan, amassing 18 points to take the win, mainly thanks to Rachael Locke for winning the whole thing, despite being a Year 7 student up against Year 9s. Spartan absolutely smashed it in the annual poetry writing competition this year. Robyn Anderson and Andrew Foundling came 1st and 2nd respectively, winning 17 points for the Junior Spartans, whilst Emily Curtis came 1st for the Seniors. One of the main house events is the swimming gala and this year nearly went for Spartan as we came a very close second with a tiny gap of 6 points to Trojan. Some of our key wins came from the year seven girls and year eight boys and girls, who between them 15 out of their 16 races. Thank you to all Spartans who took part; this was a good day for the Spartans. In junior house cricket Spartan came first overall thanks to great bowling from Nathan Watkins and some brilliant runs scored by Will Paddington, Harry Plumpton and Chris Brooks. Spartan juniors finally showed what they could do in the credits competition, winning in the summer term. In the final, and arguably biggest, event of the year, Sports Day, Spartan came in second place overall with many individual successes, especially in Year 7. There was a Spartan 1-2 in the girls Victor Ludorum, with Emily Kerry pipping Charlotte Smith to the title. Jasper Walford won the Year 7 boys edition, with maximum points in his three events, including a school record in the 150 metres. Further congratulations go to Chris Brooks, Georgia Murray, Aron Welch, Jasmine Meacock and Harry Carter, who all placed in the top 3 in their respective year groups. We’d like to say thank you to last year’s house captains, James Green and Toby McLellan and the Sports captains Mollie Schofield and Max McHugh and of course Mr Wilford. Good luck to the members of Spartan house leaving us, and welcome to the new members of Spartan House that have joined in September. May this upcoming year be not only successful, but enjoyable.
