· The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has been in existence since 1980, when it
was formed as a loose alliance of nine majority-ruled states in Southern Africa known as the Southern
African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC), with the main aim of coordinating
development projects in order to lessen economic dependence on the then apartheid South Africa
· SADCC was formed in Lusaka, Zambia on 1st April, 1980, following the adoption of the Lusaka
Declaration. The transformation of the organisation from a Coordinating Conference into a
Development Community (SADC) took place on 17th August, 1992 in Windhoek, Namibia when the
Declaration and Treaty was signed at the Summit of Heads of State and Government thereby giving
the organisation a legal character
· The Member States are Angola, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius,
Moçambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe
· The SADC headquarters are located in Gaborone, Botswana

· The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa which is a preferential trading area with
nineteen member states, a population of over 389 million, an annual import bill of around US$32
billion, an export bill of US$82 billion and a geographical area covering 12 million km²
· COMESA's current strategy can be summed up in the phrase… 'economic prosperity through
regional integration', COMESA forms a major market place for both internal and external trading on
the African Continent
· The member states are: Burundi, Comoros, D.R. Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya,
Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and
Zimbabwe
· COMESA was formed in December 1994, replacing a Preferential Trade Area which had existed
since 1981. Nine of the member states formed a free trade area in 2000, with Rwanda and Burundi
joining the FTA in 2004 and the Comoros and Libya in 2006
- Objectives of COMESA are to assist in the achievement of trade promotion which includes:
· Trade liberalisation and Customs co-operation, including the introduction of a unified computerised
Customs network across the region
· Improving the administration of transport and communications to ease the movement of goods,
services and people between the countries
· Creating an enabling environment and legal framework which will encourage the growth of the
private sector, the establishment of a secure investment environment, and the adoption of common
sets of standards
· The harmonisation of macro-economic and monetary policies throughout the region
