The tools fortify a supervisor’s ability to provide structured, focused and effective clinical supervision. The MIA-STEP training introduces clinical supervisors to an effective strategy for observation-based clinical supervision, the use of which has potential to improve counselor skills in motivational interviewing. TRAINING OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of the training, participants should be able to: Demonstrate that they have become acquainted with the MIA-STEP manual and explain how it is used to clinically supervise clinicians in MI. Describe how to use a MI adherence and competence rating system to provide clinicians with feedback about their performance. Demonstrate that they have learned how to use MIA-STEP tools to coach clinicians in MI. Deliver clinical supervision using a supervisory style consistent with MI. Practice using a learning plan to set goals and objectives designed to enhance counselor proficiency in MI. Using the MIA:STEP tools and processes included in the training and materials will: Enhance the quality of the agency’s clinical supervision. Build counselor knowledge and proficiency in using MI strategies. Provide a model which can be used for improving counseling and supervision skills beyond the MI assessment. TARGET AUDIENCE This is an advanced program for clinical supervisors who are looking for a way to measure MI proficiency in their staff. Attendees must have MI training as a prerequisite; this training focuses on tools to measure MI and is not an MI training.
