A student must produce a valid student card and staff members their staff cards in order to be registered. Registration is done at the Circulation Desk on the Ground Floor of the Library. 3. BORROWING MATERIAL AND FINES Library members are required to produce their valid staff or student cards when borrowing Library materials. A fine of R1.00 (one rand) per item per day is charged for overdue material. If the overdue material is not returned within 30 (thirty) days of the expiry date, a bill will be prepared and a handling fee charged in addition to the R1.00 per item per day. 4. ELECTRONIC RESOURCES The Library offers valuable electronic resources and services that clients can access through the Internet to assist in their studies and research. 8.1 LIBRARY WEBPAGE The Library webpage can be accessed through the University of Limpopo website at: http://www.ul.ac.za. Click on a relevant link for information needed The link will include the following: 8.1.1 ASK A LIBRARIAN This is a 24-hour service where Library users can ask questions online and receive quick responses to their questions via e-mail within 48 hours. To use this service, one should have an email address. 8.1.2 E-LEARNING The Library offers a variety of free basic and advanced business and computer courses including A+, ICDL, Project Management, Financial Management to name but a few. The publications cab be accessed through the web address at http://ul.netd.ac.za/jspui or http://www.netd.ac.za 9. AUDIOVISUAL COLLECTION The Library has a collection of videotapes and CD-ROMs on all subjects. These can be borrowed and viewed in the Audio-visual Room on the second floor. PERSONAL COMPUTERS (PCs) A number of PCs are placed on the Ground floor and 2 nd floor for undergraduate students and for postgraduate students on the 1st floor. These PCs are for use by students for retrieving information. PC s placed near the circulation counter are for searching OPAC only. PC’s at other areas are for searching OPAC, Online databases and the Internet. 11. Reserve materials may only be used in the Reserve Study Section during opening hours or may be borrowed overnight or for the weekend. 11.1.3 INTER-LENDING (EXT 2368) Materials, which are needed but not available in the Library collection, may be requested through the Interlending Loans Scheme from other libraries. Only staff members and postgraduate students of the University may use this service. 11.2 INFORMATION SERVICES 11.2.1 AFRICANA Name Office Telephone Subject Librarian Africana 015 268 2968/4606 This is a special collection of material on Africa. The collection is regarded as special because it includes old, rare, unique and valuable works. The collection is what might be termed ‘a national treasure’ being preserved for future generations to enjoy. LOCATION The collection is housed on the ground floor of the Library. COLLECTION The collection includes the following: - Monographs and periodicals on Africa, with special emphasis on Southern Africa, e.g. African literature, Southern African history and African politics. Theses/Dissertations from various universities. Extended essays by honours and final year students at the University of Limpopo. University publications such as Turf Update, Masa and Communiqués. Reports of Commissions of Enquiry. Calendars of various academic institutions. The collection is meant for reference and research purposes and as suchis administered as a closed stack system. Users do not have free access to the stacks. The collection includes books and periodicals that cover economics, accounting, public administration, business management, industrial psychology and development studies. Books are situated on the left-hand side of the floor and are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. Journals are situated on the right-hand side of the floor and are arranged alphabetically by title. 11.2.5 LAW Name Subject Librarian Office 1st floor Law Library Telephone 015 268 2321/4606 The collection includes legal textbooks, journals, statutes, ordinances, law reports (case books) and commission reports on legal issues. Books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. Journals are arranged alphabetically by title. The Law Section is composed of three sections, namely Law Reserve, Open Shelves and the South African Law Reports Section. LAW RESERVE DESK Students and staff have to consult the Law Reserve Desk for materials. All the materials covering South African Law are located in the Law Reserve. Lecturers also put study materials in the form of pamphlets for their students at the Law Reserve Desk. Students and staff who wish to use these materials must sign for them in the control record book. OPEN SHELVES All foreign law books and journals are put on the open shelves. These materials are for additional reading and are to be used within the Law Library. SOUTH AFRICAN LAW REPORTS SECTION All South African Law Reports from 1910 to 1992 are put in this section. Students that need to use Law Reports from 1993 upwards should consult the Law Reserve Desk. RULES AND REGULATIONS The Law Library uses a closed stack system, which allows no study material to be signed out of the Library. All books, periodicals and reports are to be used within the section. 11.2.6 GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS Name Subject Librarian Office 2nd floor Telephone 015-268 2958/4606 Government documents are publications in book or non-book form published by the government or at expense of the government or by a private publisher on instruction by the government. Government documents are important sources of information for study and research. They consist of many kinds of publications covering a wide range of subjects like political science, economics, commerce, law, history, education, public administration and other disciplines. COLLECTION The collection comprises the following types of publications: Legal and parliamentary: These are publications that emanate from the legislative-making process of parliament. As laws of the country are made in parliament, these publications come into existence. They include discussion papers, White and Green papers, Bills, Debates, Statutes and Government Gazettes. Administrative: These are publications that deal primarily with the administration of the country. They include commissions of inquiry, annual reports, statistical publications, etc. Scientific: These are research publications in the natural sciences and humanities, as well as research publications of various government departments. - Newspapers There are different newspapers put at this section for students to use. Daily newspapers: Sowetan, Business day, Daily Sun, The Star and The Citizen. Weekly/ Sunday Newspapers: Sunday Times, Sunday World, Sunday Independent, Sunday Sun, City Press, and Mail & Guardian. Local Newspapers: Polokwane Observer, Northern Review, and Capricorn voice. For more information contact extension 2958 Government documents include publications of local and foreign governments and inter-governmental organisations such as the United Nations, World Health Organization, International Monetary Fund, African Union, and NEPAD. PHOTOCOPYING MATERIAL IN THE LIBRARY Name Library Assistant Office Ground Floor, Photocopy Room Telephone 015-268 2469 The Library has a Photocopy Room in which students and other users are able to make photocopies. The room has glass doors and is located on the ground floor just behind the Personal Computer stations. PHOTOCOPY MACHINES The Library has five (5) photocopy machines, which are placed in the Photocopy Room. PHOTOCOPY CARDS Photocopy cards are used for photocopying. Cards are obtainable from the Photocopy Room at R10.00 each. The price is subject to change. PHOTOCOPY CHARGES Only two size A4 copies, can be made from the machines users are advised to consult Photocopy Officers in the Photocopy Room. Charges per copy are as follows:A4 = R0.50 PHOTOCOPYING To make copies a user needs to deposit money into the Magnetic Photocopy Card using the card dispenser/ reloader in the Photocopy room.The card can be reloaded several times until 3 000 copies have been made, after which it can no longer be used. A new card must then be purchased. Users are allowed to make 50 copies per day. This is irrespective of copy sizes or number of materials being copied. When making copies users are required to respect Copyright Law at all times. Photocopying of a substantial part of copyrighted material, i.e. more than 10% thereof, is a criminal offence and thus punishable by law. Users are advised to further familiarise themselves with the stipulations of Copyright Act 98 of 1978 and its amendments.
