Dodd Family Censuses – Great aunt Dinah Ash family
My grandfather James Ash had a younger sister Dinah, who married Thomas Dodd in 1875. They had
only one census period together to have a family, as both of them died in the mid 1880s – first Dinah in
1885, then a year later Thomas. Both were born and lived their entire lives in Willoughby. Thomas
came from a large family, and when he passed away, his brother William took Dinah’s two children
Arthur and Charles to live with his family in nearby Braunston, which is just over the border to
Northamptonshire.
This document is a collection of the censuses that trace Thomas’ family back to the beginning of
censuses in 1841, then follows the lives of their two children and their families. Dinah’s early years
censuses are in the James Ash family of origin file.

William Dodd – Dinah Ash’s brother-in-law
To guess at what happened after Dinah and Thomas died, I have included the censuses outlining Uncle
William’s history – in 1871 he was married to Mary Ann, who was also born in Willoughby, and had two
young children George and Jane. In 1881, his wife had died after 1874 when their third child William
was born – perhaps in childbirth? – and he was still living in Willoughby as a farm labourer. His eldest
son George was already working as a farm labourer at 13.

In 1901 I found Frances with her son Francis Clifford living with her widowed mother – hence I assume
that she was not married to her son’s father. Haynes is a huge family in Priors Hardwick and
surroundings in Southam, with at least 7 other Haynes families having babies 1900-1910.

In 1881, I find Frances’ family in Priors Hardwick, Southam, Warwickshire after finding her birth
registration, showing she was born in 1877. The Lydia who is living with her mother and Francis Clifford
in 1901 was born in 1879, Frances’ younger sister. Frances is already married to Charles Dodd, so
Francis is apparently just visiting his grandmother and aunt – or perhaps since Charles & Frances haven’t
had their first child yet, maybe she stashed him with grandma until step-dad comes around.
