February 2013 THE BEATRICE GALLATIN BEUF FOUNDING FATHERS UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP GENERAL INFORMATION AND APPLICATION - 2013 Our Founding Fathers were not only men of brilliant intellect, they were men of sterling character as well. Among them were two of my ancestors, Elbridge Gerry and James Mason, both of whom signed the Declaration of Independence. These men believed that no republic could succeed without the active support and participation in government of its outstanding citizens. This same holds true in every phase of our national life. We shall always need dedicated leaders--people of fierce integrity, strength of character, and strength of purpose. They must be individuals of action, endowed with an imaginative and creative trend of thought, whose bent is to use present knowledge to develop new and useful concepts for the future. With this in mind, it is my purpose to seek out students of this quality and to offer them my personal and financial support. Beatrice Gallatin Beuf * * * * * GENERAL REGULATIONS These Scholarships are in the amount of $5,000 per year, tenable for three years. When a student completes his or her tenure as a Founding Fathers Scholar or for any reason becomes ineligible to continue to hold a scholarship, the Selection Committee for this award shall select another recipient. The tenure of a Founding Fathers Scholarship depends upon the maintenance by the scholar of a standard of work and conduct, which, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, justifies the Scholarship. A student will become ineligible to retain the scholarship if he or she does not maintain high academic standards, becomes dependent upon alcohol or other addictive drugs, is convicted of a serious crime (felony), or has been absent from the University for more than one semester. In the absence of a sufficiently qualified candidate, the Selection Committee will make no nomination. If no candidate should be selected, the money which would have been used that year may be added to the principal of the endowment as determined by the Selection Committee and the Trustees of the endowment. Please sign one of the following statements: I hereby forego any claim of access to letters of appraisal written on behalf of my application for a Founding Fathers Scholarship. (signed) I do not wish to forego claim of access to letters of appraisal written on behalf of my application for a Founding Fathers Scholarship. (signed) INFORMATION FOR THE PERSON FROM WHOM A LETTER OF APPRAISAL HAS BEEN REQUESTED The person whose name is given above is an applicant for a Founding Fathers Scholarship. The Selection Committee will be grateful if you will provide a frank statement regarding this applicant's qualifications. Please send your appraisal to the Dean's Office of the candidate's college by March 15, 2013. Proven intellectual and academic quality of a high standard is the first quality required of applicants. Detailed assessments of the candidate's academic qualifications will be particularly helpful. Student applicants will be required to show integrity of character, interest in and respect for their fellow beings, and the ability to lead. It is not expected that you will be able to speak from first-hand knowledge of the candidate's qualifications under all those heads. If you are primarily acquainted with the candidate through teacher/pupil relationship, you are asked to concentrate particularly on academic quality and potential, although your assessment of the other qualities will be welcome. If, on the other hand, you are better acquainted with the candidate through non-academic interests, you are requested to concentrate on assessment of character in the knowledge that the Committee is looking for persons who show promise of outstanding achievement in later life. Please do not hesitate to speak of the applicant's limitations as well as strengths. Committees tend naturally to be dubious of appraisals that imply a given individual has no limitations whatever. The Selection Committee deeply appreciates your help in this matter. PLEASE RETURN THIS FORM AND YOUR LETTER OF APPRAISAL TO THE DEAN'S OFFICE OF THE CANDIDATE'S COLLEGE BY MARCH 15, 2013.
