2011-12 TENTATIVE DRAFT Humphrey Institute Alumni Board Committees Expectations for all committees: Meet between each Board meeting. Establish and share goals. Provide a written handout of committee work for each Board meeting. Provide no more than a 5 minute oral report at each Board meeting. Create relationships with: o Humphrey alumni o University alumni o Humphrey leadership o Humphrey faculty/fellows o Humphrey students o Prospective students o Friends of the Institute EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (Eric Anderson*, Gwen Freed, & Keith Butcher) Consists of current and past presidents and president-elect Provides ongoing planning, leadership and continuity of board leadership Plan and lead meetings and agendas – meet one month prior to each board meeting (August 15, October 10, January 16, and March 19) Develop board and ensure adherence to charge, mission, and vision o Meet annually with Institute leadership Represent the alumni board at official Institute and University events Attend University of Minnesota Alumni Association and other leadership events and training (as desired) Staff liaison from Margaret Chutich and Jim Lewis ALUMNI RELATIONS COMMITTEE (Mary Orr*, Deborah Bednarz, Deena Anders, Todd Graham, Sarah Lynch, Kiyoshi Nakasaka, Alex Oftelie) Promote communications with alumni and among alumni, including support of and contribution to the alumni newsletter Plan and support local and national alumni-focused events in Chicago and Washington, D.C. (potentially others) Support Alumni involvement in University of Minnesota Homecoming events (Fall Semester) Plan a signature alumni event (Spring Semester) Build connections between alumni and Institute leadership and faculty/fellows Promote collaboration between the Humphrey alumni society and UMAA Advocate for access to University/Institute resources for alumni Bring alumni issues and concerns to the board and the Institute leadership Staff liaison from Margaret Chutich 2011-12 TENTATIVE DRAFT STUDENT RELATIONS COMMITTEE (Matt Swenson*, Amelious Whyte, Walter Novillo, Emily Saunoi-Sandgren, Brad Moore, Scott McMahon) Advise and support the Alumni Mentor Program (Fall Semester) o Assist with recruiting and matching mentors o Advise on and support mentor events o Perform annual program review Support alumni involvement in recruiting new students by working with the Institute’s admissions and recruitment staff Plan and support “Humphrey Loves the Capitol” February 2012 event which includes an alumni/student reception (Fall and Spring Semester) Relate student issues to the attention of the board as appropriate Staff liaison from Lynne Schuman ALUMNI DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE (Paula Mazzacano*, Jim Jernberg, Sarah Lynch, Stephanie Haddad, Mark Fox) Work with the Institute Development Office to promote alumni giving Assist in direct efforts to generate funds for the Humphrey Alumni Scholarship Fund (Fall Semester) Evaluate applications and determine recipients for the Humphrey Alumni Scholarships (Spring Semester) Report on development efforts and scholarship awards Present development issues to the board as appropriate Staff liaison from Jim Lewis NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE (Gwenolyn Freed*, Deena Anders, Mark Fox) Evaluate Board’s needs annually Evaluate the board’s membership needs and expiring terms (Fall Semester) Recruit appropriate candidates for nomination (All year) Present board candidate slate to the board (Spring Semester) Conduct election and announce results (Spring Semester) Orient new board members (Fall Semester) Staff liaison from Jim Lewis EDITORIAL TEAM (Sarah Lynch, Mary Orr, Sarah Crowell, Anne Mason, Julie Lund) Currently Ad Hoc Help generate ideas for the quarterly E newsletter Conduct interviews and write articles for submission Seek people to interview, write articles, etc. Analysis of what works and what doesn’t in the newsletter Staff liaison from Anne Mason 2011-12 TENTATIVE DRAFT
