ESSAY QUESTION: The following message was posted to the website for the JMU student newspaper, “The
Breeze” on October 22, 2009:
“After admitting to tampering with the Homecoming banner contest, SGA speaker of the senate Andrew Elgert
was publicly reprimanded and almost faced impeachment during the Tuesday’s senate meeting.
“Elgert made a computer program October 14 that allowed him to vote continuously by deleting cookies or
electronic evidence in a browser that he had already voted. The program helped raised the number of votes
for the SGA banner to 65,000, three times more than JMU’s student body of 18,000 students.
“After the meeting that resulted in his public reprimand and censure, Elgert is quoted as saying ‘really,
honestly, it was a lapse of judgment. I did it because I could.’ Elgert wrote letters of apology to Misty
Newman, assistant director for scholarships and Homecoming spirit advisor, and to the senators who he feels
he ‘most offended and hurt’. “
Question: Do you think that issuing a public reprimand to the SGA speaker was sufficient punishment
for what he did, or would stronger action – such as impeachment – have been more appropriate?
Limit your response to one-page, single spaced, in font size 12 and with 1” margins on all four sides.
