(1) Please provide a brief rationale for cross-listing these courses.
This course is one of the required courses for our Child Advocacy
Studies Training (CAST) certificate program that is offered to both
undergraduate and graduate students. The course is cross listed to
allow for more robust conversations and cross-fertilization of ideas
between graduate and undergraduate students; to allow graduate
students with their theoretical understanding learn from
undergraduate students with their varied and rich work experiences
and vice versa. This will allow for a rich blend of ideas in
classroom discussions and agency settings. The cross-training
will allow undergraduate students who are being trained to be case
managers and graduate students who are being trained to be
clinicians to begin to work together as a team inasmuch as they
will work as a team in the future. This course will allow both the
undergraduate and graduate student to begin to understand the
various roles they will each play in the future so that they will be
better prepared to work with each other and be more effective and
efficient as future members of a team.
(2)
In what ways will there be a substantial difference between
undergraduate and graduate instruction?
Both undergraduate and graduate students will do the same readings
for class, but it is expected that the graduate students will demonstrate
greater depth of understanding and insight in their comments and
observations. Additionally, the assignments for graduate students are
more extensive and will require them to acquire and synthesize
information about the project at a higher level of achievement and
competence. Graduate students will be required to give a class
presentation as well as write a more extensive research paper. Also,
when the students are broken up into role plays/small groups the
graduate students will be required to talk more in-depth about some of
the clinical issues.
(3)In what ways are there substantially greater expectations for students
enrolled for graduate credit?
Graduate students will be expected to have more extensive literature
reviews and more detailed information regarding statutes and policies
pertaining to their research topics. Graduate students will need to
complete additional assignments, such as a class presentation. They
will also have a longer page minimum and additional requirements for
their papers.
(4)
In what ways will the combined instruction of graduate and
undergraduate students will be structured to ensure appropriate
attention to both groups?
The instructor of record will know which students are graduate
students and which are undergraduate students. At the first class,
the instructor will explain that the class consists of both
undergraduate and graduate students and will have students give
their names and classification. The instructor will be available to
students during office house to discuss assignments and respond to
any questions the students may have. The expectations for each
group will be clearly spelled out and when students respond to
questions, the instructor will ask if someone has additional
information to add to ensure that class discussion includes the
points of view of both the undergraduate and graduate students.
When a student provides a response to a question, and it is
appropriate, the instructor can ask if there are other comments by
students from the other level which will enrich learning for both
groups of students. When students are assigned to groups for any
reason, the instructor will be sure to include both undergraduate
and graduate students. Every effort will be made to ensure that
appropriate attention is given to both groups.
(5)
Who will be the Instructor of Record for this course (the instructor of
a cross-listed course must meet the university requirements for
Provisional or Full Graduate Faculty status).
The instructor of record will meet the requirements for provisional or full
graduate faculty status.
(6) Please attach an undergraduate syllabus and a graduate syllabus for
the cross-listed course (the requirements and expectations
for students in each course must be identified in separate syllabi,
which clearly identify evidence of substantially greater expectations
for students enrolled for graduate credit.
