Making the Case for Transformative

Gifts – Lessons from a Station

Resource Group/DEI Project – Part 2

(Note: This is Part 2 of a two part webinar and is oriented toward news stations)

The Station Resource Group, in partnership with

DEI and with funding from CPB, recently took a deep dive into case development that produced some unexpected twists and turns. SRG’s Tom

Thomas and Terry Clifford will offer the inside scoop on their planning, research, and message testing – the ah-hah moments and the final conclusions.

Part 1 description: For stations of all formats.

Learn about the SRG/DEI project, the kind of process they used, how and why they turned to an outside facilitator to help them understand public radio’s place in the community, and why you need local voices to inform your case.

Part 2 description: For news stations. Curious about what makes and effective case for journalism? The focus of the SRG/DEI project was investments in local news. Tom and Terry will share the specifics they learned about how donors see the role of public radio in meeting the information needs of local communities.

1. What's the status of project participation at this point? What are the major components of your work plan?

2. Tell us one success story. It doesn't have to be about a gift received or solicited, but can be about anything related to your participation in the project.

Boards are vital to fundraising, but fundraising is just one of their many responsibilities. The Donor-

Centered Board features tested strategies that capitalize on Leadership Volunteers' influence with donors while respecting the fact that their time is limited. Based on over ten years of research with thousands of donors, The Donor-

Centered Board helps volunteers raise more money by following donors' simple but highly effective recommendations.

Speaker: Penelope Burk, founder of Cygnus

Applied Research and respected researcher, author and fundraiser.

Fundraising Ethics and Your Station:

What every station leader needs to know about building and sustaining the public’s trust

(This session will be recorded)

Who should attend: All Station Managers and interested work team members including leadership volunteers

Registration link: https://events.meetingbridge.com/Register/?

EventCode=06123313842

This webinar is being made available to ALL public radio stations as a benefit of the LFP project.

Description

People give to people, and often we find ourselves having to walk a thin line between a station's strategic priority, what is in the best interest of the station, and how donors intend to make their contributions to address your priorities. In ethical fundraising, decisions are seldom black or white, and are most often “grey" issues with which your station should be ready to deal.

In this webinar, participants are invited to engage in a dialogue on ethical fundraising challenges and how to handle them. The webinar will include a brief overview of select AFP Standards, and three case studies will be discussed.

Presenter: Walt Gillette, ACFRE, Director of

Development, WAMU 88.5, Washington, DC

Public media is one of the most trusted institutions in the country. Stewarding this trust is an important role for all those working in public media and should not be taken lightly. In this webinar, DEI President, Doug Eichten, and LFP

Executive Director, Deb Turner, will discuss ways to build and sustain an ethical culture at a station.

Using DEI’s new Guidelines for Ethical Fundraising in Public Media as a guide, the presenters will identify the role of leaders and managers in this process and give ideas for policy development, training, and getting staff buy-in and involvement.

Presenters:

Doug Eichten, President, DEI

Deb Turner, Exec. Dir., Leadership for

Philanthropy

Engaging Board Members in

Fundraising: Research from the Non-

Profit Research Collaborative

(This session will be recorded)

Who should attend: All Station Managers and interested work team members including leadership volunteers

Registration link: TBD

This webinar is being made available to ALL public radio stations as a benefit of the LFP project.

Description

People give to people – so it makes sense to engage board members in fundraising. But does it really work for all types of organizations? And are all types of possible engagement the same?

Recent research by the Nonprofit Research

Collaborative suggests that there are some methods of board engagement that work best for smaller organizations, and others that work best for the largest charities. This session will show what works for which type of charity and why.

Our presenter will also discuss how to apply these findings and how to work with individual board members who might (or might not) feel comfortable moving ahead.

Presenter: Melissa S. Brown, who led the

Nonprofit Research Collaborative’s study. Ms.

Brown is a highly-rated instructor with The Fund

Raising School at Indiana University’s Center on

Philanthropy and receives high marks on presentations she makes on other topics related to charitable giving. She has nearly 25 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, including in fundraising for the arts, social services, higher education, and health. Before opening her own firm in 2011, Ms. Brown served for 10 years as the managing editor of Giving USA.

Requirements: Webinars are a required component of project participation. Station Work Teams are required to attend at

least 3 of the topic-based webinars and we strongly suggest you attend all scheduled events. Webinars will be recorded and available for viewing/listening within a week after the scheduled event unless otherwise noted.

Who should attend: Noted individually on each session.

Connecting to the Webinar: Invitations to each webinar will be issued to all members of your station work teams the week prior to the event and will include instructions on registering for and connecting to the webinar. Feel free to share these invitations with other staff and volunteers that might benefit from the subject matter.
