2014-15 STALEY MUSTANGS TENNIS POLICIES
Objectives
To create a tennis team which consists of student athletes who represent
Staley Middle School in an exemplary way. To learn a life-long sport while also learning
life-long skills.
Responsibilities and Rules
A physical exam is required before a player can compete in tennis matches for Staley.
All players are expected to attend tennis class on a regular basis and matches as well.
Matches are held after school and typically include players who are ranked in the top
eight on the boys and girls team.
All players should be able to play challenge matches against teammates once a week after
school to assist with determining rankings.
Tennis players have a set amount of time to get dressed for practices during class and
should not be late.
Players need to provide their own racket at all practices and matches.
Practices may include any of the following: stretching, running, rope jumping, weight
lifting, tennis drills, tennis games, match play, and any other conditioning skills.
Students will not be able to leave the tennis courts until the end of class for any reason,
including going to the locker room or bathroom.
Lockers and Uniforms
Each student will be issued his or her own locker with a combination padlock. It is highly
recommended that students not share lockers, borrow clothes, or give their combination
to anyone else. Students should lock all personal items in their locker before class and
should always close and lock their lockers before they leave the locker room.
Students are required to dress out every day in the standard FISD Physical Education
uniform. This uniform consists of a gray t-shirt and black shorts and can be purchased at
Frisco Sports Center. Students are required to wear socks and athletic shoes every day.
Students will lose points off their grade each time they are not dressed out.
Players that are participating in matches will be provided Staley Tennis T-shirts,
sweatshirts, and sweatpants for matches. Players will provide their own shorts that must
be Staley dress code compliant. The items that are issued to the players must be returned
at the end of the year and in good condition for future use. Any lost or damaged items
must be paid for at fair market value.
Jewelry is not allowed in tennis for safety reasons. This includes rings, earrings,
bracelets, necklaces, watches; etc that coaches feel could be dangerous. Jewelry should
be locked in the student’s locker before going to the gym.
Grading Policy
Students are graded on their effort and participation rather than on their sport-specific
skills or general athletic ability. Every student starts each six weeks with 100. Points are
subtracted for not dressing out for class. Once points have been lost, they cannot be
earned back. A student’s grade will either remain at 100 or decrease throughout
each six weeks.
Absences
Students that have an illness or injury should bring written note from a parent or a
doctor. A parent note is acceptable for two days. A doctor’s note is required if an
athlete cannot participate in tennis class for a longer period of time due to an injury or
illness.
There will be scheduled matches during the year, and students are required to attend these
matches. If a student is unable to attend the match, the coach must be contacted by the
parent.
Tardies
Unexcused tardiness is disruptive to athletic practices. Students are expected to be
dressed in their work out clothing and ready to participate on-time daily.
Athletic Conduct
We expect our athletes to show exemplary behavior and attitudes at all times. Proper
respect must be given to all teammates, coaches, opponents, fans, and school officials.
Athletes will follow UIL and FISD policies as well as the Student Code of Conduct.
Match Transportation
Tennis players must provide their own travel to away matches. They should travel by the
same means leaving as they did arriving. The Coach may release the player to the parent
or legal guardian of another player provided a note from the parent is given to the coach
in advance.
Class Organization
The first six weeks of the Fall semester will be a time to learn or relearn basic tennis
skills. All level players will be in tennis class every day the first six weeks. The second
six weeks we will rotate the Staley players who are not in the advanced lineup. This
advanced lineup typically consists of the top six or top eight boys and top six or top eight
girls. The non advanced players will be split between tennis and PE the second six weeks.
The third six weeks we will rotate the groups. The group that was in tennis will move to
PE and the group that was in PE will move to tennis. Players who have progressed and
developed to an advanced level will be in tennis the entire second semester whereas
players who have not will be moved to PE for the Spring semester. All players can be
placed in PE, however, if progression in tennis is not demonstrated or there are other
concerns related to attitude, effort, and participation. I will use discretion to make the
final decision on all players.
Tryouts
Athletes will be evaluated in their tennis class and will be given information throughout
the first semester regarding the standards and expectations of our athletic program. These
evaluations are based on general athletic ability as well as attitude, effort, and
participation throughout the semester in tennis. Students who do not meet the
expectations in tennis will be moved into PE for the Spring semester.
