Georgia Academy of Science Plenary Session Georgia Regents University 29 March 2014 1. Call to Order The session was called to order by President Richard Schmude, Jr. at 1:00 PM. Thanks were offered to Georgia Regents University and the Local Organizing Committee. 2. Treasurer’s report The treasurer reported on the finances and membership totals for the year, noting that paid membership was about the same as last year. Treasurer stated a need for increasing membership to sponsor the Academy Journal. He stated that affiliate memberships might be a good manner to accomplish this. 3. Secretary’s Report The minutes of the previous plenary were presented and approved. Resolutions of appreciation were presented and approved. Resolutions are attached to the end of this document. Names of elected officers are attached to the end of this document. 4. General Election Results General Elections for the Academy Officers were not required this year, as the currently serving treasurer and secretary elected to extend their terms and Officers-elect were selected last year. Business a. Georgia College and State University tentatively slated as the venue for next year’s conference. b. Discussion of affiliate memberships centered on how it was to be done. On-line journal option was brought up. c. Motion to put together a committee to study how to implement Academy Improvement Committee. The President will address this at the next council meeting. 7. Resolutions Resolutions of appreciation from the Georgia Academy of Science were presented and reviewed. The text of the resolutions is appended below. RESOLUTIONS Approved by the General Membership of The Georgia Academy of Science At the Plenary Session 29 March 2014 Georgia Regents University Whereas Georgia Regents University has hosted an excellent Ninety-First Annual Meeting of the Georgia Academy of Science, in an efficient and gracious manner, and whereas Academy members and visitors were made to feel welcome on the Summerville campus with symposia and receptions, be it therefore resolved that the membership of the Academy expresses its appreciation to President Ricardo Azziz, as well as the faculty and staff of Georgia Regents University, and directs that this resolution be conveyed to them and permanently entered into the minutes of the Georgia Academy of Science. Whereas the Local Arrangements Committee chaired by Andy Hauger, the Technical Program Chair, Barry Hojjatie, and the dedicated staff, students, and volunteers of Georgia Regents University, have organized and operated in an efficient and outstanding manner the Ninety-First Annual Meeting of the Georgia Academy of Science, and whereas they have arranged for an excellent Academy luncheon and Reception, and whereas they have ensured that all members of the Academy were well accommodated in their professional pursuits, be it resolved that the membership expresses its appreciation to the aforementioned persons and that these words of appreciation be entered into the minutes of the Georgia Academy of Science. Whereas Jim Nienow has provided excellent service to the Academy diligently and successfully in his capacity as Academy Treasurer in overseeing the budget and maintaining membership lists and whereas he has provided the Academy with outstanding leadership in reporting these items to the Council and the membership, be it therefore resolved that he be formally recognized for these efforts by the membership and that these words be permanently entered into the minutes of the Georgia Academy of Science. Whereas John Aliff has served the Academy diligently and successfully in his continuing capacity as Editor-in-Chief of the Georgia Journal of Science and whereas he has provided the Academy with outstanding leadership in the areas of juried manuscript review, breadth of topic coverage and publishing expertise, be it therefore resolved that he be formally recognized for these efforts by the membership and that these words be permanently entered into the minutes of the Georgia Academy of Science. Whereas Dr. John Mateja from Murray State University, has given an excellent plenary address, be it resolved that the membership expresses its deepest appreciation and that these words of appreciation be entered into the minutes of the Georgia Academy of Science. Whereas Dr. Hong Qin from Spelman College, has given an excellent address to the Biology section, be it resolved that the membership expresses its deepest appreciation and that these words of appreciation be entered into the minutes of the Georgia Academy of Science. 8.
