2013 HEBT Group Tennis Lesson Class Descriptions
Please read the level guidelines carefully so you sign up for the appropriate class.
Within each class, players are assigned to a particular court based on their developmental level relative to other
participants within their class. Assignments may change over the course of a session.
If, during a session, an instructor feels you or your child would benefit from either moving up or down a class level,
they will talk to you directly.
QuickStart - QuickStart Tennis was instituted by the United States Tennis Association to increase the rate of
development among young players. The size of the court, height of the net and type of balls used are specifically
designed to help kids hit more balls over the net, thereby increasing their fun and improving their stroke
development. By using a format that gives kids a better chance to succeed their first time out, it keeps them coming
back and learning the techniques that will last a lifetime.
Level 1 – Is for players in Kindergarten – 2nd grade who have never taken tennis before or have very little formal
instruction. This class will use the lower nets and low compression balls.
Level 2 – Is for players in 2nd – 3rd grade who have taken a couple of QuickStart tennis classes before (either
last summer at HEBT or during the winter at an indoor club.) This class will still use the low compression balls
but will use the regular net.
Beginner - Introduction to tennis for those who have never picked up a racquet or have limited tennis experience.
Focus is on introducing forehand, backhand, volleys and serve.
Advanced Beginner - Player should have already taken several formal tennis lessons and be able to perform a short
rally from service line to service line. Player knows the basics of ground strokes, volleys and serves but lacks on-court
experience and consistency.
Low Intermediate - Player should have achieved basic stroke form and play tennis regularly. Class focus is on
refinement and consistency of strokes and working on positioning and footwork.
Intermediate - Positioning, shot placement, footwork, and serve consistency are emphasized and competitive
strategies are integrated into games.
**NEW** Cardio Tennis (youth)– This new class is for low intermediate – intermediate players. Prepare for a
workout! A social, fun and high-energy class, cardio tennis combines tennis and cardiovascular exercise. Using music
along with instruction, this class will work to improve footwork and endurance with fast-paced play! Plan on hitting a
lot of shots. Consider taking this class in conjunction with the low intermediate or intermediate class preceding it.
Competitive drill and play- For the more serious player (intermediate level), this class will start with drills.
Competitive match play with a challenge ladder will follow in order to build competitive experience and give players
an opportunity to practice what they’ve learned in their instructional class.
**NEW**Adult Co-Ed Cardio – A social, fun and high-energy class, cardio tennis combines tennis and cardiovascular
exercise. We will use two courts and limit the class to 12. A great class for a cardio workout with music and drills to
move your feet; players will hit a lot of shots, work on footwork and build endurance with fast-paced play. Plus, it’s a
good way to meet others to play outside of class.

A Word About Make-ups:
Rain Outs - Make-up Classes: A make-up class will be scheduled for all weather-related cancellations. Please note:
we try to run every class at its scheduled time. We will not cancel class unless there is lightening/thunder in the
immediate area or the rain has been/is enough that the court surface is unsafe for play.
If the weather is bad at your scheduled class time, please check our Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/hetennis) to
confirm IF your class is canceled. Later that day, check back on Twitter to find out when your make-up will take
place. There is a link to our Twitter feed on the Huntington Estates Tennis Lessons web page or you can use the
address above. However, we highly recommend you follow us on Twitter if you have a smartphone. That way, you’ll
get all of our tweets about weather-related changes.
Please be aware most classes will be made up the day immediately following the cancelation. Most youth class
make-ups will be between 12 – 2 PM while Competitive Drill and Play and Adult classes will be during times more
compatible with the time of the canceled class (see the schedule for a sample of how we will schedule make-ups.)
Be aware that if there is a lot of rain during a particular week, we may run some make-ups on Friday afternoons
between 1 – 5 PM. As an FYI: make-up classes for lessons missed due to personal reasons are not offered.
