“Risk Societies and Cosmopolitanism”
Practical Information
This Intensive Programme (IP) ‘Cosmopolitanism, Peace and Conflict’ is pitched at PhD, postgraduate
and advanced Research Master students and consists of three clusters, each one addressing the
central theme from a different angle and perspective. Each cluster is constructed around the work of a
key thinker on cosmopolitanism and/or diversity with lectures providing both a thorough introduction to
the thinkers’ work and critical approaches to their thought. The clusters will be led by a renowned senior
teacher who will set the key-note for the entire cluster. Each day starts with a lecture by the senior
academic and responses by other experienced teachers, followed by separate tutorial groups in the
afternoons. Saturdays will consist of a cultural programme in cooperation with the Treaty of Utrecht and
other Utrecht-based cultural organizations.

About the organization
The Centre for the Humanities of Utrecht University is not only the platform for pioneering work, but
also for innovative research and research training activities. The Centre aims to bring together the most
innovative and excellent research of the faculty and to present it to the outside world. This way a

broader (non-academic) audience can become aware of the relevance of the humanities. For more

Target group
This Intensive Programme aims at PhD students, postgraduate and advanced Research Master students.
Applicants are requested to have a background in at least one of the disciplines incorporated in the IP
(philosophy, humanities, social sciences, law, and theology).
Number of participants
Minimum: 35; maximum: 50
Credits
After the fulfilment of all requirements (preparation of reading material, active participation,
assignments and final essay), participants receive a certificate of attendance from Utrecht University,
which qualifies for 7,5 ECTS (210 hours of work).
Tuition Fees (three options):
1) Students from Dutch European Partner Universities (see list below) are excused of the
tuition fee. Please enclose a copy of your Student Identity Card with your application;
2) Students from European Partner Universities (see list below) are excused of the tuition fee.

3) For all other (non-partner) students or postgraduates, the tuition fee for the programme
is €750, This fee includes reading materials, but is exclusive of travel, accommodation,
subsistence costs (i.e. breakfast, dinner, drinks etc.) and excursions.
Accommodation and Travel Grants
The Erasmus Life Long Learning Grant for all students from European Partner Universities (see list
below) covers 20 nights at inexpensive dorm room accommodation including breakfast in
Utrecht’s city centre. Accommodation will be arranged by the Centre for the Humanities. Furthermore,
75% of all actual travel costs1 is covered by the grant. Participants will have to arrange their own
travel to and from Utrecht and will be reimbursed after completion of the School. Other costs
(subsistence costs and excursions) are not included in the grant.
Participants have to make their own visa arrangements. They also have to take care of proper medical,
travel and damage insurance coverage.
