Describe safe practices when working with hazards in water and

Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the safe practice
requirements of the organisation and the Health and Safety in Employment
Act 1992 in relation to water and wastewater treatment plants; demonstrate
knowledge of hazardous substances in water and wastewater treatment
processes; demonstrate knowledge of personal health risks, hygiene
procedures, and preventive practices for people working in wastewater
treatment plants, and describe the actions required in the event of a
hazardous situation in water and wastewater treatment plants.

Organisational procedures – instructions to staff, and procedures which are
documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These
requirements include but are not limited to – site specific requirements,
manufacturers’ specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative or
regulatory requirements.
Wastewater includes stormwater and sewage systems.

Element 1
Describe the safe practice requirements of the organisation and the Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992 in relation to water and wastewater treatment plants.
Performance criteria
1.1
The obligations of the employer and employee are described in terms of the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.
Range
1.2

The duties of hazard management are described in terms of the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992.

processes.

Hazard information is identified in terms of location and content for water and
wastewater treatment substances.

The information gathered is described in terms of use for identifying, minimising,
isolating and eliminating the hazards.

2.3
Chemical and physical reactions of hazardous substances are identified in
terms of water and wastewater treatment chemicals.

any three of – oxidation, neutralisation, heat produced or needed
for reactions, use of dilution water, gas density relative to air.
Element 3
Demonstrate knowledge of personal health risks, hygiene procedures, and preventive
practices for people working in wastewater treatment plants.
Performance criteria
3.1
Standard preventive practices for personnel are described in terms of personal
health risks and methods to reduce these risks.
Range
3.2
includes but is not limited to – hepatitis innoculation.
Hygiene procedures are described for staff maintaining both water and
wastewater systems in accordance with organisational procedures.
Element 4
Describe the actions required in the event of a hazardous situation in water or wastewater
treatment plants.
Performance criteria
4.1
The actions required to locate the hazard source are described in accordance
with organisational requirements.
4.2
The actions taken to minimise the risks are identified and described in
accordance with organisational requirements.

Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
