Combustion MECH 6191 Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Concordia University Instructions for the project Evaluation scheme The project is worth 30% of the total course mark. A proposal and an audit with the instructor are required. The project will be evaluated based on the research effort, quality of proposed project and general presentation. Suggested topics for term project For your term project, almost any topic in combustion can be investigated. Find an area that interests you or you would like to learn more about. After you choose a topic, find a few key references to get an overview of the current state-of-the-art in the understanding of the field and to determine the important problems and outstanding issues. Through these projects, we are trying to learn from each other, so investigate your topic with specific questions in mind so that you can give an informative presentation to the class at the end of the term. Try to choose a topic in the next few weeks and discuss with me after class if you are having difficulties or need some suggestions for reference materials before the due date of the proposal and audit. To give you an idea of the type of topic that may be appropriate, below are some suggested topics: - Waste Incineration technology Carbon capturing technology Combustion Enhancement in IC Engines Diesel engine combustion Alternative fuel combustion and technology (Hydrogen, Methanol, Butanol, etc.) Petroleum refining industry Flame and detonation arrestors NOx formation and control EGR technology (Exhaust gas Recirculation) Afterburning in jet engines Scramjet combustion Ram accelerators Pyrotechnics Combustion synthesis of materials Case study on TWA flight explosion due to combustion of jet fuel vapors in fuel tank Soot formation and prevention Dust explosion …etc. Literature on Combustion Science Most research papers on combustion can be found in the following journals: 1.
