FIELD FACULTY ASSIGNMENTS FOR ADVANCED PRACTICUM
PLACEMENT PLANNING
Field Faculty Assignments were primarily made based on Field Faculty Liaison roles and
association with Concentration groups; previous relationship with student; or other Field
Faculty responsibilities.
ACTION: Please arrange a meeting by email with the Field Faculty member you are
assigned to for placement between January 3 and March 15, 2013. Please attach your
Advanced Questionnaire and Resume.
As MSW EDP Students moving into your Advanced Year, you will be meeting with your
the Field Faculty member assigned to for placement to discuss your advanced year learning
goals and identify organizations and settings that will be able to provide experiences
consistent with those goals and your declared concentration.

Please read the following very carefully regarding the advanced process.
1.
The starting quarter for Advanced EDP students is formally summer quarter since
most practicum sites are filled for the current academic year until June.
2.
Students interested in working in a hospital should note that many DO NOT allow
students to start until the fall quarter since they have larger student units and
commonly have seminars starting in the fall. The VA usually lets EDP students start in
the summer. Please read next section on Stipends and Scholarships in Hospitals.
3.
Exceptions can be made for students to be able to start Spring Quarter. This may be
more likely for students who are doing advanced practicum in their agencies of
employment or for CWTAP. Please discuss this with your assigned Field Faculty above.
A brief proposal for this exception must be submitted by you and your assigned Field
Faculty for approval by the Director of Field Education.
4.
January 3 through March 15 : Individual Planning Sessions with the Field
Faculty member you are assigned to for placements: Please email your assigned
field faculty (see below) to set up an appointment and return your updated resume and
a copy of your completed questionnaire (fillable format). Bring 2 hard copies of your
completed questionnaire and current resume to your meeting.
5.
Recruitment of Practicum Sites for the 2013-2014 academic year will take place in
early January. Sites will be added to the STAR Website starting in mid-January through
March. You will be able to identify sites that you are interested in with your assigned
Field Faculty during your meeting and as you stay in touch before the April referrals.
6.
A list of advanced year students with their current placements will be posted on the
bulletin board in the student lounge. If you are interested in talking with students
about their placements, you can leave a note for them in their student mail file.
7.
Our agreement with agencies in Seattle is that students WILL NOT CONTACT them to
explore the possibility of a placement. All advisement is to be done through your
assigned Field Faculty for placement. Please do not contact agencies until you receive
official notice and instructions about your placement assignment in April. Your
assigned Field Faculty advisor may be able to allow students living outside of the
Seattle area more flexibility in this process, however, this should be discussed when
you meet.
ADVANCED YEAR STIPENDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS:
A Few advanced practicum sites have Stipends available (including the VA Hospital and
Children’s Hospital). While most Stipends, by far, are in hospitals, there are a few other
clinical and administrative sites with money as well. These placements are always decided
by competitive interviewing in March and BEFORE the regular round of referrals in
early April. We will hold a meeting in February to tell you about the process of
applying for the available Stipends and other Scholarships including several Carole
Lamare Oncology and Palliative Care Scholarships . We will send an email to you in
January to give you the information you need about this process. You should talk to your
Field assigned Field Faculty member about your interest when you interview with them.
AGENCY OF EMPLOYMENT:
Some of you may be arranging an “Agency of Employment” practicum for your advanced
year. Your Field Faculty Coordinator will work with you to decide the feasibility and let you
know which documents to complete. Your practicum must be different than your job and
your Practicum Instructor must be different than your work supervisor.
TIMELINES
January 3– March 15: Individual meetings and planning sessions with Field
Faculty: Please make an appointment with your assigned Field Faculty or CWTAP
Field Advisor by email (contact information listed above) and before your meeting
email them a current resume and completed questionnaire. Because planning for
Extended Degree Program students' practicum can require more than one meeting, we
suggest scheduling your appointment early.
April 8 - April 12: Placement decision-making; recommendations will be finalized by
the Field Faculty for EDP, BASW, and Advanced MSW Day cohorts.
Week of April 15: Agency notifications of placement, followed by official student
notification of placement will be on STAR. Please contact the agency assigned as
soon as possible to arrange a placement visit before May 17. Please email a current
resume to the agency contact prior to your visit. The purpose of this visit is to meet
your practicum instructor and begin your working relationship with the organization.
By May 17: You and your practicum instructor will Respond in STAR to Accept the
placement. This action allows a Practicum Plan to be created with all of your
placement information. This action also lets the Office of Field Education know you
have visited the agency in a timely manner.
IMMUNIZATIONS:
Social Work students must adhere to University of Washington Health Sciences
Administration Immunization requirements. Failure to fulfill the immunization
requirements will delay the placement process until the immunization requirements are met.
Credit for practicum courses is withheld and the student is not allowed to register for the
next quarter of placement until compliant with immunizations. You have received
information about immunization requirements in earlier communications. If you have not
already done so, schedule an interview with Hall Health via myshots@uw.edu to review your
records. For more information about immunizations, see Resources for Students on the
practicum website
