AAI/IMMUNOLOGY 2015TM Underrepresented Scientist Travel Award
Trainees and Junior Faculty Members
Application deadline: January 12, 2015
This program provides registration and travel support for attendance at the AAI annual meeting to eligible
trainees and/or junior faculty members. This award is funded by a grant to the Federation of American
Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences
(NIGMS), National Institutes of Health [FASEB MARC Program: T36-GM08059-31].
ELIGIBILITY
This award provides funding for trainees or junior faculty members from underrepresented groups to attend
the IMMUNOLOGY 2015TM annual meeting. Groups considered to be underrepresented in the biomedical
sciences, as determined by the NIGMS, include: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, Hispanic Americans,
Latinos, Native Americans (specify tribal affiliation), and Natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands (Hawaii, Guam
and American Samoa).
Also, applicants must be:
• AAI Regular or Trainee members paid through the end of 2015
• U.S. citizens or permanent residents (with valid green card) of the United States or its territories
• Giving an oral or poster presentation at IMMUNOLOGY 2015TM
• A Ph.D. student, Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. postdoctoral fellow, or Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. junior faculty (nontenured assistant professors or equivalent).*
*NOTE: NIGMS guidelines determine that the trainee applicants must have or be pursuing a Ph.D. or Ph.D. combined
degree. Other doctoral degrees do not meet the eligibility requirements. Consideration will be given to applications from
members who are pursuing or who have an M.D. degree only if it is clearly documented that the applicants are engaged in
basic/bench research.
Exceptions:
• Federal employees or fellows/trainees at federal facilities are ineligible to apply.
• Trainees supported by federal grants that include travel to meetings are also ineligible.**
• If MARC awardees receive other AAI travel support for this meeting, the amount of MARC funding will be
reduced commensurately.
**NOTE: Trainees supported by federal grants that include travel to meetings are not eligible for MARC funding.
Applicants who are supported by NIH F-series, NIH K-series, or applicants who have similar support from other federal
agencies (e.g., NSF, etc.) are not eligible to apply. Graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows who are supported
through NIH T32 training grants, their mentor’s NIH R01 grant or similar grant from other federal agencies may receive
travel funds. All sources of federal funding must be disclosed with the application packet.
AWARD
Supported through a grant to the FASEB Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program from
the NIGMS, NIH, this award provides travel support to eligible AAI members to attend the IMMUNOLOGY
2015TM meeting. Two types of awards are available providing support of up to $1,850 for registration and
meeting-related travel expenses.

IMMUNOLOGY 2015TM UNDERREPRESENTED SCIENTIST TRAVEL AWARD APPLICATION
The FASEB MARC travel award program is intended to encourage and support participation of scientists from
Underrepresented groups in career-enhancing activities, courses and meetings. Successful applicants will
receive support for meeting-related expenses (i.e., travel, lodging, per diem etc.) up to a maximum of $1,850,
including the registration fee. Reimbursement after meeting attendance will require original receipts and all

Submit a one-page statement demonstrating financial need; identifying potential benefits to be gained and the anticipated effect this may
have on your planned research career.
Submit a letter or recommendation on departmental letterhead signed by the department head/chair or dean. Be sure to include the
email address and daytime phone number of your mentor, chair or dean.
Submit any required documentation (proof of citizenship documentation, copy of green card, tribal affiliation certificate/card, etc.)
The FASEB MARC Program review committee working in partnership with AAI leadership/staff will select the award recipients based on the
applicants’ written statements of financial need, benefits to be gained by participating in the meeting, and all supporting documentation from
applicants who are eligible for MARC funding as specified by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health
(NIGMS/NIH.) Members of AAI will be given preference.
NOTE: Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible for FASEB MARC funding. Federal employees are not eligible for
FASEB MARC funding. We are prohibited from providing federal funds to federal employees and trainees at federal facilities who receive
federal support for their salary/wages.
Applicants selected to receive a travel award will be notified by the FASEB MARC Program upon approval of their application.
